Judge to schools: Balance budget

November 15, 2010

WOONSOCKET — Mayor Leo T. Fontaine has won his bid for a court order directing the school department to balance its budget, at least for now.
Judge Bennett R. Gallo issued the “writ of mandamus” on Friday and specified in the ruling that school officials must “adopt and adhere to a balanced school budget for fiscal 2011.”
The order also directs the school department to prepare a corrective action plan “that limits spending to the amount actually appropriated for fiscal year 2011 and otherwise complies with all statutory requirements.”

EWG turns away Lincoln, 2-1

November 15, 2010

PROVIDENCE — The scoreboard doesn’t always tell the true story of a soccer game.
That may have been the case on Sunday as darkness enveloped the R.I. College soccer field while Lincoln and Exeter/West Greenwich battled through a tense Division II state championship final.
When the final whistle sounded, EWG celebrated a 2-1 victory over the gallant Lions, who hung tough in a game that saw the Scarlet Knights own a 24-10 advantage in shots on goal.

Gardner savors title triumph

November 15, 2010

Joe Gardner didn’t get a ticker-tape parade down Woonsocket’s Main Street this past Saturday for capturing the EBA (Eastern Boxing Association) New England light heavyweight title the previous night at the Twin River Event Center.
So the Woonsocket Boxing Club fighter did the next best thing. He hopped in his car, put his championship belt in his back seat, and toured the area to show his grand prize to as many friends and family members as he possibly could.
