Ponaganset's Casey McGrath runs well in state meet

November 8, 2010

GLOCESTER ---- Casey McGrath, a sophomore from Ponaganset High, crossed the finish line and looked up at the big digital clock.
Burrillville junior Anna Dumais did the same thing at Sunday’s RIIL State Cross-Country Championships.
When you're not considered one of the contenders for an individual title or a top finish, sometimes that’s the best way to determine if your five-kilometer journey was a successful one.
For the two local harriers as well as several others, the clock showed just the kind of numbers that would put their performances in that “success” category.

Woonsocket gridders turning on 'Friday Night Lights'

November 8, 2010

Welcome to the Division II football playoffs, home of the complex algorithms.
For those who remember the unprecedented five-way tiebreaker of two years ago that tabulated Woonsocket as the odd team out, a refresher course on the wording of the tiebreaker formula was held after Central knocked off Chariho on Friday night. The 40-12 outcome created a three-way logjam atop the II-A standings with Central, Chariho and Johnston all sporting identical 5-2 records.

Author returns to Lincoln to help keep kids safe

November 8, 2010

LINCOLN — One would think the last place Keith Smith, even in adulthood, would want to visit is his hometown.
After all, this is the place where — at age 14 — he had been abducted, beaten and raped by a warped pedophile who had a penchant for violence and sexual abuse against children.
On the contrary, Smith indicated he reveled in his return to Lincoln on this October night. Surrounded mostly by close friends during his childhood and teen-age years, Smith explained to his audience the happenings of that horrifying night — March 1, 1974 — and why he kept it a secret for over three decades.
