Saints top Woonsocket in Lynch Tournament

December 11, 2010

PAWTUCKET — St. Raphael Academy looked a lot sharper than Woonsocket during the finals of the Dennis M. Lynch Jr. Memorial Tournament on Saturday night.
The Saints got 15 points and 11 assists from tournament MVP Charles Correa while cruising to a 66-53 victory that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Leading 34-20 at halftime, the Saints went on a 14-2 run to open the second half.
Woonsocket, which was denied inside position by the Saints’ front line, managed just one hoop in the first 10 minutes and 19 seconds of the second half.

WARWICK — Mount St. Charles continued its early-season success Saturday night at Thayer Arena with a 9-1 triumph over a Lincoln squad that’s still finding out what life in the state’s top division is all about. This season saw the Lions jump to Division I after competing the last several years in the now-defunct I-A circuit.
Only a power play goal from Lincoln’s William Nesbitt late in the third period prevented MSC from posting its third consecutive shutout. Michael Magerman and Alex Erban supplied the firepower for the Mounties, each player recording a hat trick.

PROVIDENCE — It’s very good to be Marshon Brooks these days.
To the Providence College senior, the basket must seem as large and as inviting as Narragansett Bay on a summer’s day. The prodigious scoring outputs are quickly becoming a regular feature, as Saturday saw Brooks once again torch the strings with great frequency.

WOONSOCKET – Roland Adams lost his home Friday afternoon but knows he could have lost much more had it not been for a wired fire alarm system in a five-family apartment building at 97 Rebekah Street.
“Everyone got out so it could have been a lot worse,” Adams said while watching city firefighters working inside the fire-damaged building after they knocked down flames erupting from a back second-floor apartment.
