PROVIDENCE – The hole was just too big to climb out of.
A gutsy second half effort by North Smithfield wasn’t enough to knock Mount Pleasant from the unbeaten ranks in Division IV on Saturday as the Northmen left Conley Field with a 28-22 loss.
WOONSOCKET — Carnell Henderson had a hunch that West Warwick wouldn’t be a pushover. After watching game film of Saturday’s Division II-B opponent this week, the Woonsocket High coach felt the Wizards were a much better outfit than their 1-5 league mark indicated.
He was right…at least for the second half.
Luckily for Henderson’s crew, it took care of nearly all of its business in the game’s first two quarters en route to a 29-0 blanking of the Wizards on Senior Day at Barry Field. For the league’s top defensive team, the shutout is the Villa Novans fifth of the season.

CUMBERLAND --- It’s been seven years since Cumberland High last captured a playoff game, but on Thursday night, the Clippers ended that drought in a big way in its Division II preliminary-round match with Warwick Vets High.
Michaela Leblanc and Michelle Malboeuf had solid games at the net and Robyn Andrade and Jessica Larivee keyed a strong showing from the service line for the Clippers in their easy 3-0 triumph at the Clippers' Wellness Center.
While the fates of politicians were decided on Election Day, the fates of five playoff-hopeful Blackstone Valley clubs could be determined as early as this weekend or as late as Thanksgiving morning.
When October ended, so did much of the drama in the Division II-B playoff race. Last weekend’s play saw the top three seeds etched in stone in Tolman (6-0), Woonsocket (5-1), and St. Raphael (4-2) and the final spot still up for grabs between Mount Hope and Toll Gate.

SLATERSVILLE- Scott Daniel Wright, Jr., 13, of No. Main St., Slatersville, died Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Hasbro Children's Hospital, Providence.
Born in Providence, he was the son of Scott D. and Christine J. (Mancini) Wright.
Ruth E. Jellison
PROVIDENCE- Ruth E. (Cummings) Jellison, 87, of East Street died Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Tockwotton Home, Providence. She was the wife of Rev. Frederick K. Jellison, rector emeritus of St. James Church, Woonsocket. Rev. and Mrs. Jellison were married for 67 years.
Born in Fairhaven, MA, a daughter of the late Ralph and Winnifred (Baker) Cummings, she had lived in Woonsocket for 25 years, Lincoln for 27 years and North Providence for 2 years before moving to Providence last April.
Claribelle G. Lussier
WOONSOCKET- Claribelle G. (Lavallee) Lussier, 86, of Woonsocket, RI passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Landmark Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with kidney disease. She was the loving companion of the late Alfred N. Masson and wife of the late Robert L. Lussier.
Born in Woonsocket on April 22, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Heliodore and Noella (Giguere) Lavallee.
John W. Sullivan
HARRISVILLE- John W. Sullivan of Harrisville, Rhode Island, formerly of Reading passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Overlook Nursing Center in Pascoag, Rhode Island. He was 90 years of age.
Born in Boston, John was the loving son of the late William and Mary Sullivan and Gerald and Barbara Goggin. John was a warm and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be sadly missed.
