WOONSOCKET â Rhode Islandâs First Lady Stephanie Chafee will be visiting Woonsocket Thursday at a public forum at the Woonsocket Harris Public Library entitled âWomen, Health Disparities and HIV/STI Prevention: Building Healthy Communities and Families in Rhode Island.â
The forum will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the library, 303 Linton Ave.

My favorite working moment of 2011 came back in late May when The Military Page asked area veterans to show up for photo shoots in Pawtucket and Woonsocket.
I had my doubts about how many vets would attend, figuring they had many other things to do on a sunny Saturday in May, but those doubts vanished when the vets came walking up to the assigned meeting place, many of them with their wives or children, sometimes even grandchildren, mingling with other veterans and clearly enjoying the chance to have their picture taken with fellow veterans.

PAWTUCKET â Lincoln Schoolâs doubles team of Hayley Lough and Jamie Pine continued their mastery of Mountâs Katherine Porcaro and Emily Cardosa in Saturdayâs state championship finals at Slater Park.
Mount won the first set 6-4 before the Lincoln School duo used a topspin lob technique to great advantage while winning the final two sets, 6-1 and 6-2. The Lynx team has won all three matches this season between the No. 1 doubles squads of the Division I powers.
BURRILLVILLE â It was a day that Kevin Deschamps and his Burrillville teammates soon wonât forget.
Deschamps finished with 202 rushing yards on 14 attempts with four touchdowns as the Burrillville picked up its first win of the season, blowing past Scituate, 45-6, in a non-leaguer Saturday at Alumni Field.
âIt was great to see the kids enjoy today,â said Broncos head coach Gennaro Ferraro, whose team has absorbed more than its fair share of close setbacks. âIt was nice to see all that hard work pay off.â
FOSTER â Ponaganset High may have lost to division-leader Tolman High, 21-14, yet the loss hardly placed a damper on the Chieftainsâ playoff outlook.
BURRILLVILLE â The fate of Charles Hopkinsâ headstone is a perfect example of how far things had gone at Pascoagâs Historical Cemetery No. 12.
Carlo Mencucci and his wife, Betty, knew Hopkins was supposed to be buried next to his father, Augustus Hopkins, a 19th century mill boss whose grave was marked by a prominent monument. But there was nothing beside the gravestone of the family patriarch save for a mossy depression in the ground.
SMITHFIELD â There is nothing stopping mayors and city councils from passing an ordinance right away that stops COLAs (Cost of Living Adjustments) on municipal employee pensions, General Treasurer Gina Raimondo told a business forum Friday morning.

NORTH SMITHFIELD â The Northmen took care of business on Friday night, outclassing the PCD Co-Op juggernaut by a 35-6 margin.
North Smithfield is now 2-2 in Division IV with three tough assignments left on its league schedule. The Northmen visit North Providence (2-2) next Friday, then host currently unbeaten Mount Pleasant (4-0) on Nov. 4 and then entertain a currently 4-1 Central Falls squad on Nov. 11.
LINCOLN â On paper, thereâs not much that separates the top two teams in Division II-North â Lincoln High and Mount St. Charles Academy.
On the field Friday afternoon, the numbers didnât lie.
The first-place Lions scored all of the offense it would need and then held off a very-determined Mount squad in the second half to post a 3-1 win at Manville Park.
With three games left on its schedule, the victory improved Lincolnâs league record to 14-1-0 and all but secured it the II-North crown. The second-place Mounties dropped to 10-2-0 with still six games remaining.
Donna L. Ashton
WOONSOCKET- Donna L. Ashton, 63, of Elm St., died Sunday, October 16, 2011 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket.
Born in Northbridge, MA, she was the daughter of Louise (Lavallee) Ashton of Uxbridge, MA and the late John L. Ashton.
She was a member of the American Legion Oliver Ashton Post 343, Whitinsville and the Burger King Club of Whitinsville. She loved lighthouses and was also a diehard fan of the Boston Red Sox.
