Police: Shooting in Cumberland not random (UPDATED)

February 23, 2011

CUMBERLAND – The three masked bandits who broke into an Overhill Road home Wednesday night and left the owner with an alleged gunshot wound to the head after a violent struggle had targeted the residence, police said.
"In order to ease concerns of neighboring residents, the residence at Overhill Road appears to have been the target of the intruders, and the burglary was not a random act," Police Chief John R. Desmarais said in a statement released Thursday morning. "I want to assure the neighboring residents that the neighborhood, as well as the rest of the town, is safe."

Hockey playoffs begin next week

February 23, 2011

Over the years, the final weekend of the high school hockey regular season had always featured plenty of drama and storylines. Regular-season titles on the line. Teams pursuing higher seeds. Others fighting for late playoff berths.
Unfortunately for local fans, there won’t be much suspense this weekend.
A big reason is because only five boys’ teams from the area qualified for their respective tournaments. Four of the five teams that didn’t make it were long eliminated from postseason consideration, while a fifth, Lincoln, saw its run at a playoff berth come to an end last weekend.

Thanks to sponsors, rink still open

WOONSOCKET — In an era of shrinking resources, the city has cut personnel, programs and perks residents have long taken for granted, but one frill that's survived the lean season is the popular municipal ice-skating rink at River Island Park.
Open seven days a week, the artificially-refrigerated rink overlooking the Blackstone River is still free, and even a kid who doesn't own a pair of skates can borrow some from the guy in the snack shed, then lace them up beside the glowing embers of a fire pit.
