Woonsocket, Pawtucket sue state

PROVIDENCE — The new school funding formula passed by the General Assembly last year has been hailed by educators, public officials and parents as a vast improvement in the way Rhode Island pays for its public schools. But at least two local communities claim it is inadequate to the point of being unconstitutional because it shortchanges poorer school districts.

WOONSOCKET- Harold E. Mathewson, 80, of Main St., died Sunday, April 10, 2011 in Miriam Hospital, Providence after an illness. He was the widower of Florence T. (Grenier) Mathewson, who died in February, 1972.
Born April 24, 1930, he was a son of the late Earl and Blanche (Savignac Brouillette) Mathewson.

JAMESTOWN- Clifford, Catherine, (O'Donnell), Jamestown, formerly of North Smithfield, died April 7, 2011 at home in Jamestown, RI. She leaves her beloved husband Joseph of Jamestown, son John Clifford, Manhattan, NY, daughter Patricia Clifford, Franklin ,NH, daughter Kimberly McFall, Greenville SC, and two beautiful grandchildren Emma and Maureen. She also leaves her loving sister Joanne Ryan of Woonsocket, RI.

WOONSOCKET- Lucien Carmel, 86, formerly of Read Ave., Woonsocket, died Saturday at The Holiday in Manville.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Philibert and Marie Anna (Tessier) Carmel. He was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mr. Carmel was a graduate of Mount St. Charles Academy. After his graduation from Mount he enlisted in the service in 1943.
During WWII Mr. Camel served in the Army in the European Theatre with the 687th Field Artillery Co. of the 548th Infantry Battalion.

WOONSOCKET- Roger A. Cournoyer, 76, of Brookhaven Lane, passed away Friday, April 8, in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence after a brief battle with cancer. He was the husband of Muriel (Dussault) Cournoyer, and they had been married for 55 years.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Adelard and Aldea (Beauregard) Cournoyer. He was a life-long Woonsocket resident.
Mr. Cournoyer was a proud Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy.

WOONSOCKET- Ruth M. (Richard) Tempest-Shaw, 92, of Woonsocket, died Thursday, April 7, 2011. She was the wife of the late James "Buster" Tempest and the late Wallace Shaw. Born in New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Eva (Lirette) Richard.
