PROVIDENCE â Just two weeks after businesspeople from across the state flocked to the Statehouse to fight Gov. Lincoln Chafeeâs sales tax plan, Chafee marched into his opponentsâ camp, a Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce breakfast, to defend his proposal.
âThere is no doubt that taxes are harmful, thereâs no argument about that,â Chafee said in response to a question from Call Publisher Barry Mechanic. âItâs a cost we donât want to pay.â

CRANSTON â The never-say-die attitude was there. So too were the late-game heroics that some have come to associate Lincoln High baseball with.
On a sun-splashed Tuesday afternoon, the end result went astray from the now one-beaten Lions. A valiant comeback bid was nullified thanks to Cranston Westâs Alex Morettiâs two-out double with one on in the bottom of the seventh, lifting the Falcons to the 8-7 walk-off triumph. Morettiâs clutch knock touched down in the right-centerfield gap, chasing home catcher Jeff Diehl with the winning run.
CUMBERLAND â Ask any of the girlsâ coaches about who would win Tuesdayâs Northern Division showdown between host Cumberland High and unbeaten squads Woonsocket and Central Falls and the response was the same.
They simply didnât have a clue.
âThis is going to be a close meet,â said Woonsocket coach Dan Richard midway into the competition. âI thought before the meet, plus or minus five points between all three schools.â
The property manager of the Citizens Bank branch on Eddie Dowling Highway in North Smithfield, near Park Square, who asked not to be identified, speaks to a bank employee after being notified that a car had crashed into the front of the building just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. EAST GREENWICH- Bourbonniere, Loretta R. (Menard), 88, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. She was the wife of the late Arthur J. Bourbonniere.
Born in Canada; she was the daughter of the late Edouard and Eveline Menard.
A life-long Democrat, Loretta was active politically through the 1960's/70's and served on the Board of Canvassers in Woonsocket.
Gerard M. McGee
BURRILLVILLE- Gerard M. McGee, 67, resident of North Smithfield passed away at his residence, on April 21, 2011.
Loving husband of Linda (Lorenz) McGee.
Born in Woonsocket RI, a son of Doris (Caron) McGee and the late Maurice McGee.
Gerard was a grocery manager for the former Almac's Supermarket Co. for many years, until its closing, and then he went to work at the Hess Co. He was a Navy veteran of Vietnam War. He enjoyed deep sea fishing.

NORTHBRIDGE- Hannah Marie Rabitor, 9, of 31 Quaker Lane died Sun. April 24 after being stricken ill at home.
Marion E. Hall
WOONSOCKET- Marion E. Hall, 86, of Woonsocket, former Sister of St. Joseph (Sister Mary Alicine), passed away on February 23, 2011 at Oakland Grove Health Center.
Born in Woonsocket on October 24, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Pryor W. and Bertha (Chapman) Hall and sister of the late John Pryor Hall and Sgt. Francis T. Hall.
Alexander S. Makowski
BLACKSTONE, MA- Alexander Stanley Makowski, 91, of 79 Mendon St. passed away in his sleep on Saturday April 23, 2011.
He was the husband of the late Veronica (Grabiec) Makowski.
Alexander was born on June 2nd, 1919 in Douglas, MA., he was the son of ten children to the late Mr. & Mrs John Makowski of Douglas, MA.
Alexander was the loving father to three children, Carol Makowski of Cranston, RI, The late John Makowski of Blackstone and Dennis Makowski and his wife Colette, also of Blackstone.

CUMBERLAND- Doris I (Menard) Cazeault, 65, of Howe St. died Monday, April 25, 2011, in the Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island surrounded by her family.
She was the wife of Andre' H. Cazeault, of Cumberland.
Born in Woonsocket, daughter of the late Raymond and Orpha (Carpentier) Menard.
Doris was a Homemaker, and enjoyed spending time with her family, and friends.
