N.S. softball team chasing playoff berth

April 23, 2011

NORTH SMITHFIELD --- When the R.I. Interscholastic League looked into realigning its three softball divisions during the offseason, there was plenty of talk of dropping North Smithfield to Division III -- and for good reason.
Over their past four seasons, the Lady Northmen had won just a dozen games and languished near the bottom of the Division II-North standings. Their 12-62 record over this span was the worst in the entire league, and a far cry from the 2005 team that went 17-3 and reached the Division II state finals.

PROVIDENCE – The Chafee administration’s economic development projects tend to be high-profile, big-ticket items such as creating the Knowledge District in the former I-195 corridor, revitalizing the airport/train station district and continuing the Quonset Point expansion.
But in the Blackstone Valley, Chafee has his eye on revitalizing the main streets of the small distressed cities.
He has made much-publicized tours of Main Street in Woonsocket and Broad Street as it links Central Falls with Pawtucket.

To mark Earth Day, volunteers gather to clean up Cass Park

April 23, 2011

WOONSOCKET – The litter and brush holed up at Cass Park put up a fierce battle, but in the end they were no match for the good soldiers on Earth Day.

Drafted by a core group of Earth Day organizers, he donned jeans and armed himself with a heavy-caliber plastic rake to go after the fallen oak leaves stubbornly entrenched in a thorny mass of wild rose bushes and brambles.
