LINCOLN â Before a brutal, four-game stretch of crossover games, Lincoln High was sitting nicely atop the Division I-North standings with an unbeaten 8-0 mark.
Itâs a little different now.
Facing some of the upper-echelon of squads from I-South and I-Central over the last week, the Lions suffered their third setback in the last four games Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to Bishop Hendricken at Chet Nichols Field. The Hawks belted out 11 hits and had a quality start from lefty Tim Pannone to improve to 9-2 for the spring.
WOONSOCKET â Longtime Planning Director Joel D. Mathews has retired â again. But this time it looks like itâs the real deal.
He made his intentions plain in a letter forwarded to Mayor Leo T. Fontaine last week, two days after clearing out his office, co-workers said.
âUpon this occasion of my retirement, I would like to issue a very public thank you,â Mathews said in the letter, which was released to the press on Monday. âI believe I've been very fortunate to have held the very best job in Woonsocket.â
Louise L. LaFerriere
WOONSOCKET- Mrs. Louise L. (Berard) LaFerriere, 64, resident of Woonsocket, died May 1, 2011 at Landmark Medical Center. She was the wife of Robert W. Belhumeur.
Born Aug. 7, 1946 in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Philip and Alice (Vincent) Berard, Sr. She was a lifelong city resident.
Louise was a homemaker.
She enjoyed spending her time with her grandchildren.
Ruben A. Mendoza
LINCOLN- Ruben A. Mendoza, 64, of Old Main Street, Manville died unexpectedly Sunday, May 1, 2011 at home. He was the beloved husband of Carmen (Gimotea) Mendoza.
Born in San Juan Batangas, The Philippines, a son of the late Florentino and Teodora (Almariego) Mendoza, he had lived in Manville for the past 30 years.
Mr. Mendoza was an accounts payable representative for CVS, Woonsocket for the past 21 years.
He was a communicant of St. James Church, Manville.
Doris M. Martin
NO. SMITHFIELD- Doris M. (Goewey) Martin, 96, of Old Smithfield Rd., died Saturday, April 23, 2011 in The Holiday, Lincoln. She was the wife of Frank H. Martin whom she married June 28, 1944.
Born in Revere, MA, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Olivine (Roy) Goewey.
She worked twenty years at the former Fogarty Hospital, No. Smithfield, retiring in 1986.
Stanley M. Durgin
BELLINGHAM- Stanley M. Durgin, 64, of Bellingham, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2011 at home suddenly.
He was the beloved husband for 12 years of Mary A. (Wheeler) Durgin.

WOONSOCKET â A 21-year-old city woman faces a charge of driving under the influence, death resulting, following a single-vehicle accident on Mendon Road early Monday.
Dakota McKenna of 233 North Main Street is charged in the death of Antonio Williams, 20, whose last address was listed as 232 Morin Heights, according Lt. Eugene Jalette, a police department spokesman.
Police arriving at the area of 1144 Mendon Road near Theresa Street at 1:46 a.m. found a 1997 Ford Taurus had struck a telephone pole at the location, Jalette said. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
