WOONSOCKET â€” Police say they have a suspect in custody in connection with a shooting that left a Sayles Street man seriously injured Friday night.
The victim was identified Monday as Neil Coppinger, 24. He was still a patient at Rhode Island Hospital yesterday, where he was admitted in critical but stable condition, said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette.
Coppinger was outside his home on the dead-end alongside the Blackstone River when he was shot in the upper torso. Police found Coppinger on the ground bleeding about 11 p.m., shortly after the shooting was reported.
WOONSOCKET â€” Creating a new national park encompassing the Blackstone River and its tributaries, the historic Slater Mill in Pawtucket and existing historic districts in Cumberland, North Smithfield and two Massachusetts communities is the National Park Service's favored option for replacing the heritage corridor concept.
In a long-awaited report released yesterday, the park service says the continuation of the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor as it currently exists is still one of three options under consideration.

BELLINGHAM- George E. Gibson, Jr., 66, of Bellingham, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 17, 2011 at Woonsocket Health Center with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 44 years of Lauren (Wilson) Gibson.
CUMBERLAND- Arnold Sousa, 86 of Hilltop Road, passed away Sunday in the Grandview Center, Cumberland. He was the loving husband of Esmeralda (Gonzalez) Sousa.
Born in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland, he was the son of the late Cypriano and Theresa (Gomes) Sousa. He was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.
Mr. Sousa was a Life Underwriter for the Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co., retiring 1983. He owned the former Arnolds Market in Central Falls and also worked for four years at the former Owens-Corning Firberglass.
He was a WW II US Navy Veteran.

She was born on November 21, 1944 in Uxbridge, Massachusetts to Raymond Lulu and Stella Podeski Lulu.
Arlene was a beauty consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics for many years. She was a member of the Polish -American Society of St. Petersburg. Florida. Past member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, Florida, and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Sarasota, Florida.
Violette T. "Vi" Remillard
BLACKSTONE- Violette T. "Vi" (Cartier) Remillard, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 18, 2011 at Landmark Medical Center with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of the late Edgar G. Remillard.
Born in Woonsocket on April 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Aoure (Rondeau) Cartier.
