Rain halts starts of Legion "Elite Eight"

WEST WARWICK --- They will try this again today.
Tuesday’s start to the American Legion Senior Division “Elite Eight” double-elimination tournament only reached a few innings before inclement weather rained on most of the state and suspended both opening-round doubleheaders at McCarthy Field in West Warwick and Pierce Field in East Providence.

It’s a special time for the players of the Cumberland American Little League All-Star team. The squad, which is mostly comprised of 12-year-old youths, stormed through the District IV Major Division Tournament and after two dominating victories at the state level stands just a win away from representing Rhode Island at the Eastern Regionals in Bristol, Conn., next week.

Proposed charter changes in hands of City Council

WOONSOCKET — The City Council accepted a list of 15 proposed charter amendments from the Charter Review commission and now begins its own work on which of those measures should be presented to local voters in November.

BLACKSTONE- Mrs. Mary M. (Thomas) Chita, of Park St., Blackstone, died July 24, 2011 at home. She was the wife of the late John P. Chita
Born Aug. 1, 1921 in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Hollings and Martha (Allsop) Thomas. She was a Blackstone resident most of her life.
Mary worked for the former Tupperware Company, the Polytop Corporation and Donnellys Jewelry Manufacturer.
She was a member of the Blackstone School Department PTA and enjoyed gardening and dancing with her late husband.

SLATERSVILLE- Jacqueline M. LeClair, 89, lifelong resident of Slatersville, died Saturday, July 23, 2011 in Milford Regional Medical Center, Milford, MA.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Adrien and Alfreda (Robillard) LeClair.
She worked fifty-two years as a receptionist for a local Optometrist. Jackie loved to knit and spend time with her family and friends.
