WOONSOCKET â During the final few minutes of the first half, Woonsocket High goalie Melinda Rice had to contend with a vicious attack by Classical.
But each shot, nearly a half dozen in that short span, Rice thwarted away with her stick or on a diving save.
That was just a sampling of the stellar effort by the talented senior in Thursdayâs Division II clash at Barry Field. She finished her dayâs work with 16 saves, most coming at close range.
If Bruce Guindon and his high school football officiating brethren had their druthers, the installment of a fifth member to the longstanding four-man, on-field crew would have transpired years ago.
What was once a plea is now part of the Interscholastic Leagueâs pigskin fabric. Beginning this season an additional pair of eyes will be called upon to aid specifically in the judgment of pass plays and blocks downfield, two areas that in the past have been tough calls a for group colloquially called âzebrasâ to accurately decipher.
The two-a-days are history. So are the scrimmages and Injury Fund games.
This weekend, the regular season for high school football gets under way with non-league games scattered throughout the state.
Eight of the Blackstone Valleyâs 11 teams kick off tonight, and the big games of the bunch will feature two-time Division II champion Woonsocket taking on East Providence at Pierce Field and former Thanksgiving Day rivals Shea and Lincoln playing each other at Lincolnâs Ferguson Field.
Lionel J. Harnois
WOONSOCKET- Lionel J. Harnois 86, of Pond St. passed away Thursday, September 8th surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Doris L. (Lacroix) Harnois whom he married 58 years ago. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Emilien and Marie (Deserres) Harnois.
Randy Walker Sr.
NO. SMITHFIELD- Randy Walker Sr., 54, of Mechanic St., No. Smithfield passed away suddenly Tuesday afternoon at Milford Regional Hospital.
He is the son of the late William L. Walker and Edith (Bulris) Reynolds.
He is survived by two children Tabitha and Randy Walker, three sisters Sybil Walker, Linda Rothwell and Cindy Gingell, three brothers Chester, Mickey and Robert Walker, along with his many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Victor P. Boucher
WOONSOCKET- Victor P. Boucher, 78, of Grandview Ave, died September 6, 2011 in U. Mass Medical Center, Worcester. He was the husband of the late Carolyne (Bragg) Boucher.
Born in Pascoag, he was the son of the late Alcide and Aurore (Bergeron) Boucher.
Mr. Boucher was a Korean War Navy Veteran. He was the warehouse manager for the Wrentham Developmental Center for the past fifteen years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Veterans Association and a former member of Woonsocket Lodge of Elks #850.
Ana L. Rodriguez
WOONSOCKET- Ana L. Rodriguez, 52, of Estes St., died Tuesday September 6, 2011 at Home & Hospice Care of R.I. with her family by her side.
Born in Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Saro and Carmen (Matiaz) Rodriguez.
She worked for Potpourri Group, Inc. in Whitinsville, MA. for several years.

PAWTUCKET â Arnie Beyeler had everything figured out â or so he believed prior to discussing his baseball career ambitions with Brad Mills a few years back during spring training.
At the time Beyeler was managing in Double-A Portland while Mills served as Terry Franconaâs bench coach in Boston. One day the pair engaged in some casual chatter when the minor-league skipper revealed what he considered the pinnacle: coaching third base for a major league club.
ALLENTOWN, Pa. â A brief period of clearing skies provided some false hope that the PawSox may be able to play the opener of their Round One Governorsâ Cup Series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Unfortunately, the clearing skies disappeared and another heavy downpour forced the postponement of the game.
The series will now be pushed back by one day, with the opener being played Thursday night at 7:05 at Lehigh Valley. PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler will keep the same pitching rotation in effect, with Matt Fox (10-4, 3.96) going up against Dave Bush (1-2, 3.91) in the opener.
WOONSOCKET â The man who allegedly fired a gun at two people in a car, causing the summer's most dramatic bit of mayhem in the process, surrendered Wednesday morning after a weeks-long game of cat-and-mouse with the police.
Justin Menard, 25, whose last known address was on Fifth Avenue, had been on the lam since the July 14 incident on Robinson Street.
One of multiple rounds Menard allegedly fired passed through the windshield of the other vehicle and struck the driver, who crashed through a nearby house in attempts to escape the fusillade.
