Bennett returns to Mount hockey team's lineup

These past two months have been sheer torture for Nick Bennett.
During this time, the senior defenseman has been a fixture at Adelard Arena, practicing with his Mount St. Charles teammates late every weekday afternoon. But once the weekend rolls around, he’s had to take off his skates, step off to the side, and be a mere spectator as the Mounties took the ice for their Division I and non-league games.

N.S. girls pull away from Shea in double overtime

NORTH SMITHFIELD – In a very-competitive Division III this season, North Smithfield and Shea are among a crowded bunch that will be fighting for the four playoff spots.
Even though the postseason is still more than a month away, there was a playoff-type atmosphere taking place on Wednesday night when the two teams collided at Lovett Gymnasium.

Woonsocket to audit tax-exempt properties

WOONSOCKET – The city has launched a review of some $256 million worth of real estate to make sure it’s properly classified as tax exempt and, if not, restore it to the tax rolls.
A separate review is under way to make sure the city is capturing all of the taxes it is owed on so-called tangible property, which includes business equipment, fixtures and furnishings, said Tax Assessor Christopher Celeste.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Sandra Lois DeCherry, 50, of Mowry Avenue, North Smithfield, Rhode Island died on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Hospice in Providence, Rhode Island following an illness that began in October.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica on February 5, 1961, she was a daughter of Daphne M. Watson of Tavares, Florida.
She immigrated to the United States in 1983 and resided in Franklin prior to moving to North Smithfield in February 2002.

CRANSTON- Lillian L. Parenteau, 86, formerly of Woonsocket, died Monday in Cedercrest Healthcare, Cranston. She was the wife of the late Sylvio Parenteau.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Stanislas and Albina (Germaine) Courtemanche.
She was an employee of the Foxboro Company, Foxboro, MA before retiring and had also worked in several Mills in Woonsocket.
She leaves her children, Raymond Parenteau of Cranston and Anita Mathieu of North Kingstown. She was the sister of the late Marie Lozeau, Beatrice Perron and Gertrude Gibeault.

Ex-Rhode Island Gov. Garrahy dies at 81

PROVIDENCE (AP) — Former Rhode Island Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy has died.
His son, John Garrahy, confirmed through an assistant at his Providence law firm Wednesday that the former governor had died. He was 81.
Additional details were not immediately available.
Garrahy, a Democrat, served as governor from 1977 to 1985. He was lieutenant governor before that.

LINCOLN- Irene A. (Strycharz) Lula, 91, of, Lincoln, RI, Formerly of Blackstone, MA. Passed away on January 23rd. She was the loving wife of the late William M. Lula.
Born, March 27, 1920 in Blackstone, she was the daughter of the late Klemens & Barbara (Majkut) Strycharz.
Irene was employed as a Service Specialist at the Wrentham State School, before retiring, before that, she was employed in the family business, the former Strycharz Market in Blackstone.

BOYNTON BEACH, FL. - Susan (Daigle) Laforme, 60, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at home. She was the wife of the late Roland Laforme.
Born in Bellingham, she was the daughter of Norman and Leona Daigle.
She was employed for many years as a security guard then started her own limousine business. She was a graduate of Blackstone High School.
She is survived by a sister, Nancy Daignault, two nephews, a great niece and a great nephew. She is also survived by two half sisters, Joanne Jobin and Mary Rice and two half brothers, David and Raymond Harper.
