Elks are a force for good in the community

January 29, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity.
Maurice E. Berube has spent the better part of 11 years trying to promote and practice the four cardinal virtues of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. But it wasn't until last month, when he found himself the recipient of a simple act of kindness by an 11-year-old city girl, that he really understood what it meant to be an Elk.
Berube, Grand Exalted Ruler of Woonsocket Elks Lodge #850, says it happened in December when he was helping deliver 227 food baskets to needy families during the holiday season.

Mount took a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game on an unassisted goal by Brianna Castro. La Salle tied it at the 3:27 mark when Meaghan Rickard beat Mount goalie Sarah Erban.

At the age of 15, Dutilly joined the Harrisville Hose Company as a junior member in 2000. In 2003, he joined the ranks as a senior member.

Getting extra in your refund checks needn’t be so taxing

January 28, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Tax time has arrived and with it the potential for local families to bring in a little extra in their refund checks.
That was the message federal, state and local officials, and their community partners, put out Friday during the kickoff of the Rhode Island Community Action Association's (RICAA) annual effort to provide free tax preparation services to working Rhode Islanders at the Museum of Work and Culture.

Woonsocket, Mount girls among several teams with low numbers

January 28, 2012

When you play golf, consistently shooting low numbers is a positive thing. When you step on your bathroom scale, seeing low numbers will always make your day.
But when it applies to your basketball team, or any sport for that matter, low numbers are often not good. Low numbers usually equate to low numbers in the win column.
Longtime Mount St. Charles Academy girls’ basketball coach Nine Morey knows all about that. The Mounties, who have averaged 15 wins the last four seasons, including a state runner-up finish in 2007-08 and last year, are struggling this winter.

WEB ONLY: Mount hands Hendricken first loss

January 28, 2012

WARWICK --- Victories don’t get any bigger than this one.
Mount St. Charles knocked Bishop Hendricken from the unbeaten ranks on Friday night by skating to an impressive 4-1 win in their Division I contest at Thayer Arena.
Junior center Brian Belisle scored a pair of unassisted goals late in the third period for the Mounties, who improved to 6-4 and dropped the Hawks to 10-1-1.
The Mounties took a 2-0 lead on Ryan Berard’s goal 6:55 into the game and Callan Morisseau’s goal 1:50 into the second period before the Hawks tied the score midway through that period.

Mount girls edge arch-rival Bay View

January 27, 2012

WOONSOCKET --- Caitlin Shea’s unassisted goal with 3:19 to play in the second period snapped a 2-2 tie, and Mount St. Charles was able to hold on the rest of the way and grab a 3-2 win over rival Bay View on Friday night at Adelard Arena.
The victory was the eighth in a row for the Mounties, who are 10-1 and had suffered their loss back on Dec. 16 to the Bengals, 2-1.

Lady Novans outlast SRA, 41-36

January 27, 2012

WOONSOCKET – On a night in which she was honored for scoring her 1,000 career point earlier this season, senior Kailey Fugere and the rest of her Woonsocket High teammates cooled off a resurging St. Raphael Academy program Friday night with a 41-36 decision at Savaria Gymnasium.
Fugere, who was recognized for her milestone during a halftime ceremony, finished with 17 points. The game was hardly the Villa Novans best effort, however, as St. Ray’s overcame a 14-point deficit before the break and made their host sweat it out until the final buzzer.

January 27, 2012

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A coalition of non-profit and private developers broke ground Wednesday at Marshfield Commons, a 38-unit housing development that will enable the town to reach its state-mandated threshold for affordable housing.
Called “a model of rural smart growth,” the tract of townhouse style two- and three-bed units preserves three-quarters of its 6.3-acre Mechanic Street construction site as open space.
