Cumberland decks Coventry, faces Hendricken tonight

COVENTRY — After a successful weekend where they won four of their five dual meets at Mount Anthony Union (Vt.), the Coventry wrestling team returned to state competition hoping to prove a point against the most successful dual-meet team in the state over the last five seasons.
But Cumberland, which is looking for its third straight undefeated dual-meet campaign, had another idea. The Clippers breezed through the first matches and then rode the strength of their standout wrestlers – Erik Travers and Tom Lacroix – for a 46-24 Division I-North victory.

Unbeaten Bay View whips Woonsocket

WOONSOCKET --- Woonsocket High did something on Tuesday that only one other team was able to do to Bay View Academy this season -- give the mighty Bengals a competitive battle.
Unfortunately for the Villa Novans, their strong effort couldn’t not fetch them a win over the unbeaten Bengals, who bused home with their 14th Division I-North triumph, 54-40, on Woonsocket’s “Women In Sports” night at Savaria Gymnasium.

Lady Northmen edged by Davies, 37-36

LINCOLN – There are wins and there are BIG wins.
For Davies Tech, this one has to be listed under the latter category.
With their playoff fate in Division III more than likely being determined in the final week of the league season, the Patriots scored a crucial victory over North Smithfield on Tuesday night by eking out a thrilling 37-36 decision on their home court. Sophomore Waleska Kelly fueled a total team effort by Davies, netting 12 points along with nine rebounds, seven steals and six blocks.
How important was this triumph for Davies?

City Hall turns into art gallery

WOONSOCKET — Some say there’s just no room for analytic cubism in local government, but don’t tell the kids at Beacon Charter School for the Arts.
Their abstract works of art, along with more traditional landscapes and self-portraits, have turned the corridors of City Hall into gallery space.
The latest joint venture between the city’s growing arts crowd and Mayor Leo T. Fontaine’s administration is designed to showcase the work of student artists from Beacon and give everyday folks who pass through City Hall an opportunity to sample the exceptional expertise of these emerging artists.

BURRILLVILLE- Raymond Joseph Leoncavallo, 61, died Wednesday Feb. 1, 2012 at home on Town Farm Rd, Pascoag. He was the husband of Cynthia A. (Buturlia) Leoncavallo, whom he married Mar. 17, 1972.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of the late Louis and Olive (Gagne) Leoncavallo.
Raymond worked for Carol Cable Company of Lincoln as a Reeler for many years. Ray loved camping in Maine with his wife and son.

PARSIPPANY, NJ- Robert E. Steere Jr., Age 79, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at St. Clares Hospital in Denville.
Robert was born and raised in Chepachet, Rhode Island. He lived in Connecticut before moving to Parsippany in 1966.
He served in the United States Air Force, active duty and reserves, from 1953 until 1966 having been honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.
Robert graduated from Classical High School in Providence, Rhode Island and then went onto to receive his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

PALM COAST, FLORIDA- Walter S. Eastman, age 101, formerly of Franklin, MA and Lincoln, RI, passed away February 2, in Palm Coast, Florida. He was the husband of the late Theodora DeAmicis Eastman and the late Aleta Cornelius Eastman.
Born in Temple, NH, he was the son of the late Rev. Harvey M. and Mary Eastman of Slatersville.

WOONSOCKET- Yolanda Willems, 47, of Cato St. passed away January 30th at Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket RI after a long bout with pancreatitis.
Born January 6th, 1965 in Alkmaar, Netherlands to Klassina Kel and Jan Willems.
She was last employed at Milford Regional Hospital. Willems had enjoyed many years in the medical field serving in a variety of emergency response roles. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, skiing and being by the ocean.
She is survived by one daughter; Ashley Willems-Phaneuf of South Portland, Maine.

BLACKSTONE- Edward "Chico" Ciccone, 86, died Monday, February 6, in the Lydia Taft House, Uxbridge. His wife, Juliette (Robidoux) Ciccone, died in 1991.
He is survived by a half brother, Jimmie Ciccone, of Woonsocket, RI; two half sisters, Mary Ellen Mercure, of Blackstone, and Linda Orlando, of Woonsocket; a cousin, Thomas Ciccone, of Whitinsville, and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ciccone was born in Boston, May 21, 1925, the son of Louis and Hilda (Hiltz) Ciccone, and lived in Blackstone until moving to Uxbridge in 2009.

SLATERSVILLE- Joseph Alphonse St. Hilaire, 95, of School Street, Slatersville, died Monday February 6, 2012 in Oakland Grove Health Care Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Marie Louise (Pacheco) St. Hilaire, whom he married, May 13, 1973.
Born in Manchester, NH, he was the son of the late Omer and Florida (Berger) St. Hilaire.
Mr. St. Hilaire was a night supervisor for the former Imperial Knife in Providence for 17 years, retiring in 1981. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Slatersville.
