Man arrested for attempted murder

WOONSOCKET — A city man was arrested at a North Smithfield motel Wednesday on an attempted murder charge after allegedly slashing two others in a bloody feud outside a convenience store earlier this week.
Alvin Huggins, 28, was taken into custody at Traveler’s Motor Lodge by members of the North Smithfield and Woonsocket police departments, said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette. Police seized a steak knife and a blood-stained sneaker from his room at the motel, located at 1210 Eddie Dowling Highway.

Landmark/Blue Cross mediator identified

WOONSOCKET – A veteran Providence litigator has agreed to serve as mediator in attempts to resolve some vexing legal claims between Landmark Medical Center and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island that could affect the sale of the teetering hospital.
William Dolan III is general counsel and chief legal officer for Brown Rudnick LLC, a firm with more than 200 lawyers in five U.S. cities and two more in Europe.

Man hurt in fall from bridge

Rescue personnel prepare to take a man to Rhode Island Hospital after he reportedly jumped or fell from the Court Street Bridge Wednesday. Police Capt. Edward Lee said the incident occuring just before 5 p.m. remained under investigation. The man landed in the parking lot behind the Allen Street Condominiums between the Main Street bypass and the Blackstone River. Lee said the man was conscious at the scene while being assisted by rescue personnel, but did not have further information on his condition Wednesday evening.

School Committee fires Busby

WOONSOCKET — In a rare move to handle a personnel action in public session, the School Committee on Wednesday voted unanimously to terminate School Department Finance Director Stacey Busby after hearing a recommendation from School Superintendent Giovana Donoyan supporting the action.
The termination of Busby came after School Committee Chairwoman Anita McGuire-Forcier heard no motion from her peers for a move into closed session to consider the sole personnel matter on the evening's agenda.

Valley cities top R.I. foreclosures

A new study released today by HousingWorks RI says Central Falls, Woonsocket and Pawtucket ranked among the top four communities with the highest foreclosure rates from 2009 through 2011, with multi-family homes bearing the brunt of the blow.

TOWN CREEK, ALABAMA- Normand R. Fontaine, 88 years old passed away on January 12, 2012 in Town Creek, Alabama.
He was born on December 7th, 1923 and raised on Diamond Hill Road in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
Son of the late Jules and Parmelia Fontaine and the brother of the late Gerard Fontaine, late sisters Doris, Therese, Pauline and one surviving sister and brother-in-law Priscilla and Alfred Boucher of Bellingham, Massachusetts.

BELLINGHAM- Edgar R. Lamarre, 80, of Bellingham, MA passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough, MA. He was the beloved husband for 60 years of Claudette E. (Desjardins) Lamarre.
Born in Lincoln, RI on February 16, 1932, he was the son of the late Armand and Victoria (Paulhus) Lamarre.

Devoted father of Jason DeGrange and his wife Kerri of Granville, MA. and Steven DeGrange of Westfield, MA. Brother of Barbara Dunayeski of Blackstone, MA. Albert DeGrange and Dorothy DeGrange of Plainville, MA. Loving grandfather of Ava and Sam DeGrange. He was the brother of the late Carol Sims.. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.

City girl beaten by her peers

WOONSOCKET – Police have charged two city girls with assault with a dangerous weapon, a foot, and two other girls with simple assault over the Saturday afternoon attack on a 12-year-old city girl that was recorded and uploaded to the Internet.
The four suspects are also charged with conspiracy over the assault, according to Juvenile Detective Jamie Paone, investigating officer.
The video-recorded beating outside the Plaza Village apartment complex was reported to involve a victim the assailants knew and then spent Saturday night with after the attack.
