PAWTUCKET – If recent history is any sort of indication regarding the Red Sox’s handling of minor league players with opt-out clauses written into their contracts, then expect pitcher Aaron Cook to head up to Boston next week.
PAWTUCKET — Leave it to the Yankees to spoil what would have been history-in-the-making for the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Standing just three outs away from extending their winning streak to a franchise-best 10 consecutive games, the PawSox watched as reliever Garrett Mock melted down in an 8-6 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Wednesday afternoon at McCoy Stadium.
LINCOLN -- Cumberland High head coach Scott Carpenter couldn’t believe his good fortune when, back on March 19, two new girls claiming to be goalies showed up at to his first practice at Tucker Field.
“I was grinning ear-to-ear, and I know the girls were wondering why,” Carpenter chuckled. “We had two kids who had never played lacrosse before; they were (senior Kara Gorman and (freshman) Julia Eaton. From Day One, you could definitely see both had huge potential.”
WOONSOCKET — Citing allegations of sexual misconduct that happened nearly 30 years ago, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence has defrocked a priest assigned to Precious Blood parish and ordered him to move out of the rectory.
PAWTUCKET — While saying that he didn’t believe the accounts from either party were “100-percent accurate” and that the incident itself might have been sparked by “road rage,” a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal magistrate on Wednesday ruled in favor of the Pawtucket Police Department and sustained charges of refusal to submit to a chemical test and a roadway violation that had been brought against Jarred Lynch stemming from his 2011 collision with a Pawtucket Police sergeant.
Patricia A. Fortino
WOONSOCKET- Patricia A. Fortino, 71, of Woonsocket, died April 24, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center.
Born in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Fortino. She lived in Woonsocket for most of her life.
She worked as a secretary for the former Rosecraft Jewelry Company in Woonsocket retiring in 1996, and previously worked for the former CD Burns Company for 15 years. Pat was a active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 29 years.
Christopher E. Bellini
BURRILLVILLE- Christopher E. Bellini, 46, of Burrillville, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
He was born on February 26, 1966 in Woonsocket. He was the son of June Aubuchon and the late Richard Bellini.
Christopher was a Burrillville resident most of his life in addition to residing in Alaska for a few years with his dog Hydro, enjoying his true passion of hiking and the great outdoors.
Harriet C. Reed
BELLINGHAM- Harriet C. (Frantzen) Reed, 76, of Bellingham, MA passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. Reed, Sr. deceased January 31, 2012.
Born in Boston, MA on May 22, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Amalie (Karoluiseu) Frantzen.
CUMBERLAND — Despite Cumberland Town Council President James T. Higgins' best efforts to drum up unanimous support, the council last week ended up voting 6 to 1 to adopt a resolution in support of Governor Lincoln Chafee's municipal reform and relief legislative package.
The vote came one week after Chafee personally urged the council to support his municipal rescue package, saying support of the proposals will ease the financial burden on cities and towns and help stave off more local bankruptcies.
