WOONSOCKET — With the city teetering at the edge of a fiscal cliff, State Revenue Director Rosemary Booth Gallogly appointed a budget commission yesterday to take control of its financial affairs.
The three non-elected members of the panel were identified as Dina Dutremble, Peder A. Schaefer and Bill Sequino Jr. by members of the governor’s staff. By statute, Mayor Leo T. Fontaine and City Council President John Ward are automatically on the panel.
CUMBERLAND — Saying the stakes could not be higher, Mayor Daniel J. McKee has called on the Town Council and the community to recommit to investing in public education, saying restoring Cumberland as a top ranked school district is about much more than budget dollars.
“This is not only an educational journey we're talking about here, it's also a political and economic journey and that's where the Town Council, mayor's office and community are going to have to get engaged,” McKee told the council at last week's public hearing on his proposed $82.8 town operating budget for fiscal 2013.
Lucien G. Desmarais
CUMBERLAND- Lucien G. Desmarais, 83, of Mendon Rd., Cumberland, died Tuesday at Landmark Medical Center. He was the loving husband of Therese R. (St. Sauveur) Desmarais. They were married on January 18, 1947.
Born in Bellingham, he was a son of the late Napoleon and Helene (Moreau) Desmarais. He was a resident of Cumberland for over 60 years.
Mr. Desmarais was employed by Edgar Sutherland Company and also at Pepin Lumber in Woonsocket for many years before retiring in 1990.
Kathryn M. McLaughlin
BLACKSTONE- Kathryn M. (Maloney) McLaughlin, 84, a lifelong Blackstone resident, died May 28, 2012 in Milford Regional Medical Center, Milford, MA. She was the wife of the late Thomas McLaughlin.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Edward S. and Eileen A. (Brooks) Maloney.

Capenito
BELLINGHAM- Jacqueline C. (Champoux) Capenito, 69, of Bellingham passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Landmark Medical Center with her loving family by her side after being stricken at home. She was the beloved wife for 48 years of James A. Capenito.
Born in Bellingham on May 24, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Theresa Prefontaine.
She was the loving mother of Lisa M. White and her husband, Robert of Woonsocket, and Sharon A. Pare and her husband, Marc of Bellingham; and leaves her cherished grandchildren, Kelly, James, Jonathan, Scott and Jamie.
Lucien St. Pierre
NORTH SMITHFIELD- Lucien St. Pierre, 89, of Slatersville, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket.
Born in Woonsocket, Lucien was a son of the late Ovide and Rosalba (Gallant) St. Pierre.
Carolyn M. Letendre
BURRILLVILLE- Carolyn M. Letendre, 68, resident of Burrillville, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012 at the Bayberry Commons Nursing Home in Burrillville after battling a long illness of COPD.
She was the daughter of the late Edmund Dick and Dora (Riel) Worcester.
Norman R. Berard
WOONSOCKET- Norman R. Berard 72, of Mendon Rd, died Wednesday, May 23 in the Trinity Health & Rehab Center.
He was born in Woonsocket, a son of the late Arthur and Alice (Gravel) Berard.
Mr. Berard was a self employed painter for many years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Woonsocket Lodge of Elks, St. Joseph's Veterans, and the Cercle Laurier.
Maurice R. Bouchard
WOONSOCKET- Maurice R. Bouchard, 66, of Morton Ave., died May 27, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Eugene and Rita (Taillon) Bouchard.
Mr. Bouchard worked for Avery Dennison for twenty-five years and was a member of the Cercle Laurier, Woonsocket.
