PAWTUCKET â For Justin Thomas, the near month he spent as member of Bostonâs bullpen was merely a case of guilt by association.
Even though the 28-year-old lefthander was relegated to afterthought status â while with the Red Sox, Thomas allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings prior to getting farmed out to Pawtucket on April 27 â he was still part of a unit that became known as the land of diminished returns. No matter which reliever BoSox manager Bobby Valentine summoned, disaster seemed to follow.

PROVIDENCE â Local lawmakers are rallying to the defense of Woonsocketâs Place Jolicoeur war memorial with legislation to protect it and similar monuments from state constitutional challenges and defend it against federal constitutional challenges.
Rep. James McLaughlin, a Democrat whose district covers parts of Cumberland and Central Falls, introduced a bill in the House yesterday that will allow any elected state or municipal official to designate any âstructure, sculpture, inscription or iconâ as a âcategory oneâ memorial.

Carpentier
WOONSOCKET- Rev. Robert A. Carpentier, 71, of Cottage St., Woonsocket, was taken home to his Lord on Wednesday May 9, 2012 surrounded by his loved ones after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Anatole and Cora (Armstrong) Carpentier.
Rev. Carpentier was ordained a Catholic Priest on June 3, 1967. He was an avid sports enthusiast, loved to travel and spend time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his love of life.
Pauline G. Rondeau
WHITINSVILLE- Pauline G. (DiBasco) Rondeau, 76, of Whitinsville, MA formerly of Bellingham, passed away on Sunday May 6, 2012 at UMASS Medical Center in Worcester with her family by her side.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on November 15, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Adelio and Loretta (Lambert) DiBasco.
Janet Cournoyer
BLACKSTONE- Janet (Carey) Cournoyer 65, of Bellingham Rd. died Tuesday at Women and Infants Hospital. She was the devoted and loving wife of Marcel Cournoyer.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Clement and Blanche (Cabana) Carey.
Janet was an assembler at A.T. Cross for over twenty years, retiring in 2010. She was an avid reader and loved to travel, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
NORTH KINGSTOWN â Four staffers from the Woonsocket Call and Pawtucket Times took home a total of five Rhode Island Press Association awards during the groupâs annual banquet at the Quonset O in North Kingstown Friday.
The showing was especially strong for photographers, who dominated the general news category. Ernest Brown took home a first place plaque for âGood Night Irene,â his dramatic photo of a tsunami-like wave crashing against the sea wall in Narragansett during the height of Hurricane Irene.
