Woonsocket Health & Rehab opens assisted living unit

WOONSOCKET — Times never stop changing in the healthcare business, and the Woonsocket Health & Rehabilitation Center keeps changing along with them.
The latest update for the 262 Poplar St. facility is the creation of a new assisted living unit, designed to give comparatively healthy individuals a housing option that still provides the security of backup nursing care, if needed.

N.S.'s Mercier earns First-Team GNAC honors at N.H.'s Rivier College

NASHUA, N.H. — North Smithfield native Marissa Mercier recently put the finishing touches on a tremendous junior season for Rivier College.
Mercier, who was a 2009 graduate and former standout at North Smithfield High, was named a First-Team All-Conference catcher in the GNAC (Greater North American Conference) after batting .450 (49-for-109) with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in 37 games for the Raiders.
She also had 17 doubles, 37 runs scored, 21 walks, 90 total bases, an .826 slugging percentage, and a .541 slugging percentage.

Japanese consulate general to help unveil ‘Hachiko’ May 19

The Japanese consulate general will visit Woonsocket on May 19 for a festive unveiling of a permanent statue of the legendary Japanese dog, Hachiko, in front of the city’s historic train depot.
Takeshi Hikihara’s diplomatic excursion is part of a broader celebration of the growing Cherry Blossom Festival in Pawtucket and Central Falls, where he also plans stops earlier in the day, says Robert Billington, executive director of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.

Schools vote to rehire 350 teachers

WOONSOCKET – The school committee voted to rehire 350 teachers for the coming school year Thursday, but will wait until May 11 to begin consideration of the budget covering Fiscal 2013.
School Committee Chairwoman Anita McGuire-Forcier said the panel's 4-0 vote to rehire teachers who were given notices of possible layoff for the coming school year was only the first of what are likely to be many committee votes on the budget in the coming weeks. School Committeewoman Eleanor Nadeau did not attend due to illness, Forcier said.

In the year-plus quest that has taken Ryan Kalish to the far reaches of dealing with injuries and back again, the Red Sox outfield prospect has learned that it’s best to not get his spirits up too much or sink too low. On the subject of looking ahead, i.e. placing a definitive date on when he might return to game action, Kalish prefers to stay in the moment.
When team officials inform Kalish that he’s passed every single checkpoint, only then will he be allowed to vacate the Fort Myers, Fla. premise that’s served as his holding cell for some time now.

Mounties rally to top Lions

WOONSOCKET — Two teams heading in opposite directions met up Friday with Mount St. Charles maintaining its winning ways courtesy of a come-from-behind 5-3 triumph at Lincoln High’s expense.
Now winners of three of its last four, MSC hung on a four-spot on visiting Lincoln in the home portion of the sixth, erasing what was a 3-1 deficit. The inning began innocently enough with Taylor Sutherland reaching on an error with Dan Glod singling to make it first and second.

WOONSOCKET- Paul R. Beaulieu, 58, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at home with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 39 years of Maryann (Tariela) Beaulieu.
Born in Woonsocket on August 2, 1953, he was the son of the late Maurice Beaulieu and the late Vivian O. (Remillard) Beaulieu Bernier.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Raymond Kucharski, 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the St. Antoine Residence. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Coricelli) Kucharski for more than 65 years.
Born Sept. 29. 1918 in So. Bellingham, MA., he was the son of the late Peter & Tekla (Hywak) Kucharski.
Before entering the St. Antoine Residence, he resided in Woonsocket for 50 years and then was a resident of Deerfield Commons in No. Smithfield.

CHARLOTTE, NC- Mr. Turenne, 89, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Thursday morning, April 26, 2012 at his home.
He was born March 14, 1923 in Manville, Rhode Island, one of five children to the late Adjutor Theodore Turenne and Berthe Favreau Turenne.
Mr. Turenne served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II and worked as a mechanical engineer with the Celanese Corporation for thirty-three years.

WOONSOCKET- Henry R. "Butsy" Scott of Woonsocket, died on May 2, 2012 at the age of 93. Henry was the husband of the late Irene B. (Provencal) Scott.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Henry and Lillian (Bernhard) Scott.
After his service in the Army, he managed deliveries for both Mullen's and Carney's furniture stores, was a maintenance mechanic at Uniroyal Tires (Rubber Shop) and retired as Building Superintendent for the Woonsocket Call. In his retirement he continued to work at the RI ARC until the age of 86.
