WOONSOCKET — Steward Health Care System surpassed a preliminary but important regulatory hurdle in its bid to acquire Landmark Medical Center Tuesday as a health department subcommittee recommended approval of the Boston suitor’s application to assume “effective control” of the hospital.
An eight-member subcommittee of the powerful Health Services Council voted unanimously in favor of Steward’s application after airing issues of Steward’s financial strength, quality of care and commitment to the needy during a series of earlier meetings.
Blanche Nault
WOONSOCKET- Blanche Nault 86, of East School St. died Wednesday at the Friendly Home. She was the wife of the late Walter Makolandra and Roland Nault.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Cordelia (Chamberland) Beland. Mrs. Nault was an assembler for AT Cross for fifteen years before retiring in 1989.
Ronnie L. McKeage
BELLINGHAM- Ronnie L. McKeage, 48, of Bellingham, MA passed away at home on Saturday, April 28, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Margo (Deschamps) McKeage.
He was the loving father of Jason Deschamps and his wife Melissa of Woonsocket, RI; and his cherished grandsons Jason Deschamps, Jr. and Andrew Deschamps.

PROVIDENCE — It seems like almost yesterday, but it was on Oct. 14, 2006 when Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. presented a marquee intracity duel between Providence super middleweights and bitter rivals Peter Manfredo Jr. and Joe “The K.O. Kid” Spina that generated a ton of buzz across the state and packed the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
WOONSOCKET — Police surprised two masked men as they were lugging computers out of Woonsocket High School through a smashed window early Sunday.
One of the suspects escaped after scaling a fence, but another was captured after a foot chase. Police also recovered about $12,000 worth of computer equipment the alleged intruders had removed from the school.
Maxwell A. Johnson, 19, was charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime with felonious intent and conspiracy to commit a felony.
WOONSOCKET — The monument defense fund hadn’t even been officially created yet, but Mayor Leo Fontaine accepted the first donation, hand-delivered, all the way from Spring Lake, Michigan.
“I really had no idea this was going to happen,” said Dennis Masson, as he wrote a check for $1,000 to the fund at City Hall yesterday afternoon.

BOSTON – For Aaron Cook and the Red Sox, D-Day – as in Decision Day – is at hand.
With Tuesday marking May 1, the day in which Cook’s minor-league opt-out clause officially takes effect, Boston must decide whether to promote the veteran pitcher and place him on the active roster or risk losing him to free agency. Reached Monday night, Joe Bick, the agent for Cook, spelled out a step-by-step process that included all involved parties.
