McGair: Billy Baron considering all options; Rakim Sanders to suit up for Warriors' Summer League team

For someone who has been swept up by the winds of change on more than one occasion, Billy Baron finds himself in no particular hurry to make a decision.
Rather than rush to judgment and settle on what will be his third college stop, Baron is adhering to a wait-and-see approach regarding his impending landing destination. A female supporter who engaged in pleasant small talk with Baron on Saturday caught a glimpse of where his collective psyche stands.

Hemond challenges Hamilton in North Smithfield

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Town resident and School Committeeman George R. Hemond announced this week that he will run as an independent candidate for North Smithfield town administrator in the November general election, giving residents a second choice at the polls.
Hemond of 18 Eaton St. will challenge incumbent Town Administrator Paulette D. Hamilton, who has held the position since 2008.

Schools pass on Garceau extension

WOONSOCKET — The School Committee has opted to turn down an extension of its former Director of Instruction and Administration's job-sharing assignment to the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), at least for now.
Mark Garceau has been working for the state agency for the past year under a loan arrangement with Woonsocket, which allows his salary to be paid for through city accounts. He technically no longer works for the local school department under that arrangement, which was up for renewal Wednesday.

Their goal: share soccer with the less fortunate

WOONSOCKET – When nine-year-old Nick Kirby found out his soccer coach was donating used soccer equipment to children in Portugal, he knew what he had to do.
Nick rounded up a few pairs of soccer cleats, some shin pads and a slightly scuffed soccer ball, stuffed them in a shopping bag and handed them over to Carlos Costa at the River’s Edge Recreational Complex Thursday.
“It’s great that other kids will get to experience soccer, too,” said Kirby.
