BRISTOL, Conn. --- Cumberland certainly did its part in pool play. Now the local Major Division (ages 11 and 12) all-star team will try to produce the three victories it needs to capture its first-ever Eastern Regional softball championship and advance to the Little League World Series.
Cumberland wrapped up its New England portion of the regional tournament with its third victory in four games on Tuesday afternoon by producing an 8-1 victory over winless Swanton, Vt. at Breen Field on the Bart Giamatti Complex.
WOONSOCKET â€“ The Zoning Board of Review voted 3-2 in support of a proposed expansion of residential use at the former St. Francis House at 167 Blackstone St., but not by a large enough majority to approve developer Gary Fernandes' request for more units.
The five zoners rendering the decision would have had to vote at least 4-1 in favor to grant approval under zoning board rules.
PROVIDENCE â€“ A Superior Court judge yesterday granted Landmark Medical Centerâ€™s motion to lift a freeze on its lawsuit accusing Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island of starving it to death with illegally stingy reimbursements â€” but he stopped short of letting the suit go forward.
After a contentious, three-hour hearing, Judge Michael Silverstein ordered Landmark and Blue Cross for written briefs and said he would decide whether the suit has any merit on Aug. 30.
BURRILLVILLE - Brother Roger (Sylvio R.J.) Neveu, S.C., 85, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died after a brief illness on July 22, 2012 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland, RI.
Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Evangeliste Neveu and Ernestine (Rochette) Neveu.
MILFORD - Everett J. "Ernie" Chamberlin, 82, of Milford, died Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Blackstone Nursing Home. He was the husband of Josephine A. Tocci for 53 years.
He was born in Woonsocket, RI, son of the late Chester and Rose (Mathurin) Chamberlin and lived in Woonsocket before moving to Milford in 1957. He was a graduate of Woonsocket High School class of 1948. He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island class of 1968 where he received a degree in Business administration.
WOONSOCKET - John C. Ollenborger, 50, of Woonsocket passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
Born in Boston, MA on April 25, 1962, he was the beloved son of John and Anne M. "Nancy" (Burdell) Ollenborger. He leaves his brothers James of Mass., Eric of Dedham, MA, and David of Bellingham, MA; and his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He leaves his girlfriend of many years Brenda Knowles of Woonsocket.
WOONSOCKET â€” Councilman Robert Moreau was hospitalized for 38 days after a bout with kidney cancer turned unexpectedly life-threatening.
Moreau, 50, who was recently discharged, said he may be well enough to attend the next meeting of the council on Aug. 6.

BURRILLVILLE â€” Frank Beazley, a Rhode Island artist and advocate for the disabled, has died. He was 83.
Beazley died Sunday at Zambarano Hospital, where he had lived for more than 45 years since he was paralyzed in a fall.
