Cumberland cruises into semis of Eastern Regionals

The Cumberland Major Division (ages 11 and 12) all-star team took its first step towards what it hopes will be the program’s first-ever Eastern Regional championship and a spot in the Little League World Series on Wednesday afternoon by capturing its quarterfinal-round game with ease.

Poll: Blue Cross would be blamed if sale falls through

WOONSOCKET — If the sale of Landmark Medical Center falls through, most Rhode Islanders would blame Blue Cross, a new poll suggests.
The poll, conducted by Marttila Strategies of Boston, was commissioned by the United Nurses and Allied Professionals, Landmark Medical Center, and Steward Health Care, the for-profit chain that wants to buy Landmark.

Residents to weigh in on fire merger

CUMBERLAND — Residents will get the opportunity on Aug. 7 to offer input on a proposed plan to consolidate the town's fire services as a single municipal public safety department that would not only include the town's four independent fire districts, but emergency medical service and police as well.

WOONSOCKET - Diana J. (Yarush) Bergeron, 54, of Hudson, Florida, passed away Saturday, July 14th at HPH Hospice in New Port Richey, Florida.
Born in Marlboro, MA, she was the daughter of the late John A. Yarush and sister of the late Mary Susan Parenteau. She was a lifelong resident of Woonsocket.

ST.FRANCIS, MAINE- Armand I. Scott Jr. (Butch) Passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on July 17, 2012.
He is survived by his wife Carla (Dubey) Scott and six children, Ryan, Daniel, Stephen, Arianna, Sirena and Aislinne of Maine.
He is the son of Armand Sr. and Doris Scott. He is also Survived by a brother Raymond Scott and two sisters and their husbands, Sheila & Jim Brousseau and Michele & Darin Celani Also several nieces & nephews.

Cumberland caps pool play with 8-1 win over Vt. team

BRISTOL, Conn. --- Cumberland certainly did its part in pool play. Now the local Major Division (ages 11 and 12) all-star team will try to produce the three victories it needs to capture its first-ever Eastern Regional softball championship and advance to the Little League World Series.
Cumberland wrapped up its New England portion of the regional tournament with its third victory in four games on Tuesday afternoon by producing an 8-1 victory over winless Swanton, Vt. at Breen Field on the Bart Giamatti Complex.

Vote stalls St. Francis House expansion

WOONSOCKET – The Zoning Board of Review voted 3-2 in support of a proposed expansion of residential use at the former St. Francis House at 167 Blackstone St., but not by a large enough majority to approve developer Gary Fernandes' request for more units.
The five zoners rendering the decision would have had to vote at least 4-1 in favor to grant approval under zoning board rules.

Judge lifts freeze on Landmark lawsuit

PROVIDENCE – A Superior Court judge yesterday granted Landmark Medical Center’s motion to lift a freeze on its lawsuit accusing Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island of starving it to death with illegally stingy reimbursements — but he stopped short of letting the suit go forward.
After a contentious, three-hour hearing, Judge Michael Silverstein ordered Landmark and Blue Cross for written briefs and said he would decide whether the suit has any merit on Aug. 30.

BURRILLVILLE - Brother Roger (Sylvio R.J.) Neveu, S.C., 85, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died after a brief illness on July 22, 2012 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland, RI.
Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Evangeliste Neveu and Ernestine (Rochette) Neveu.

MILFORD - Everett J. "Ernie" Chamberlin, 82, of Milford, died Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Blackstone Nursing Home. He was the husband of Josephine A. Tocci for 53 years.
He was born in Woonsocket, RI, son of the late Chester and Rose (Mathurin) Chamberlin and lived in Woonsocket before moving to Milford in 1957. He was a graduate of Woonsocket High School class of 1948. He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island class of 1968 where he received a degree in Business administration.
