BOSTON — There’s bringing a player up to speed after he’s been out for a lengthy stretch due to injury. Then there’s the term that Angels manager Mike Scioscia used in describing the heightened state of urgency Chris Iannetta finds himself in after missing 2 1/2 months with a broken bone in his right hand.
“You can study and simulate stuff all you want, but when you get behind the plate, you’re like that jockey on a saddle,” Scioscia explained prior to Tuesday’s Red Sox-Angels game at Fenway Park. “That’s the feeling you need and that’s where Chris needs the time in order to come together.”
WOONSOCKET — A city policeman was arrested by his own department on felony assault charges Tuesday for striking a 9-year-old girl, police said.
Officer Patrick Cahill, 23, was taken into custody on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, said Jamie Paone, a spokeswoman for the Woonsocket Police Department.
She said the girl is closely related to Cahill, but she declined to elaborate, saying the police are trying to protect the privacy of such a young person.
WOONSOCKET — Pastor Gene Giguere says he’s long felt as though the Harvest Community Church’s efforts to provide seasonal shelter for homeless men were akin to putting a Band-Aid on cancer, but yesterday he could see sunnier prospects for this troubled population.
“Up to now we’ve just been alleviating pain,” he said. “This is a step toward a cure.”
Giguere’s comments came as he joined a who’s who of political figures, affordable housing developers and advocates for the homeless Tuesday to mark the start of construction on a new homeless shelter, just for men, at 96 Burnside Ave.
