Budget panel eyes COLA

WOONSOCKET — As the Budget Commission prepares to enter contract talks with the International Brotherhood of Police Officers — within a week, perhaps — the panel continues looking for possible economies in the cost of living adjustment benefit paid to retired cops and firefighters.
On Friday, Finance Director Thomas M. Bruce III provided commissioners with a detailed snapshot of how dramatically the city’s financial burden would shrink if the benefit, known as a COLA, were eliminated from the pension plan.

Officials consider police ATV patrolling

BURRILLVILLE — Dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders who disregard traffic laws and ride on posted property in town better watch out: the police may soon be rolling out its own ATV's to catch and prosecute scofflaws.
The local police department, which has been unable to effectively catch dirt bike and ATV riders who break the law, has asked the Town Council to consider approving a police ATV patrol program that would allow police officers to patrol woods, pathways and other areas that squad cars cannot easily access.

Summer Youth Employment Program puts money in pockets, smiles on faces

WOONSOCKET – A throng of children sits in a circle around Arkaydia Farrow as she clutches an open book in one hand, trying to read a story and make eye contact with her rapt audience at the same time.
When Farrow isn’t telling stories, she’s helping this crop of six- to eight-year-olds practice their writing skills, shepherding them on field trips or managing an arts & crafts project.
In her first paid job, Farrow, 18, relishes her role as mentor and cheerleader to children while they’re in their formative years, some of them from troubled, broken families.
