PAWTUCKET – On his first official day as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Danny Valencia found himself out of Wednesday’s starting lineup. His placement under the “extra hitters” portion of the lineup card only furthers the argument that it’s going to be tough for the 27-year-old to carve out regular playing time.
Valencia is a third baseman by trade, a position where he’s logged 2,281 innings in 262 big-league games. Coming over from the Minnesota Twins via trade on Sunday, Valencia joins a PawSox ballclub that's pretty well stocked at the hot corner.
WOONSOCKET – Budget constraints have forced the school district into consolidation mode, but Schools Supt. Giovanna Donoyan is looking for volunteers who are ready to rebuild a vibrant public school system.
The superintendent announced the effort to seat a five-year Strategic Planning Committee this week to set academic goals for the future of the school district.
NORTH SMITHFIELD — A 44-year-old resident was arrested Wednesday afternoon on domestic-violence charges involving him holding a gun to the head of his elderly mother.
Brian R. Mellor, of 1350 Pound Hill Rd., was arrested after his 71-year-old mother, Carol, who lives with him, went to the police station to report that he had put a gun to her head and threatened to kill her at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
During a search of the Pound Hill Road home, police confiscated 21 weapons including numerous firearms and a crossbow, Chief Steven E. Reynolds said at an evening press conference.
Jeannette F. Guertin
WOONSOCKET- Jeannette F. Guertin, 84, of Fifth Ave., Woonsocket, died Tuesday at Oakland Grove Health Care Center. She was the loving wife of Francis X. Guertin. They were married on July 31, 1966.
Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Florida (Laird) Lefebvre. She resided in Woonsocket for most of her life and lived in Blackstone for several years in her youth.
Anthony P. Anzalone, Jr.
BELLINGHAM- Anthony P. Anzalone, Jr., 73, of Bellingham, MA passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 50 years of Irene L. (Falcone) Anzalone.
Born in Boston, MA on August 28, 1938, he was the son of the late Anthony P. and Josephine (Zappula), Sr.
