Errors cost Navigant dearly in Northeast Regional tourney opener

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Me. — The R.I. American Legion Senior Division champs from Navigant Credit Union/Fairmount Post 85 picked the wrong time to play kick the can.
Navigant committed six errors that led to three runs for the opposition in a disheartening 4-1 setback to Portland, Me. Thursday in the opening game of the double-elimination Northeast Regional tournament at The Ballpark.
Post 85 will look to remain alive when it faces Essex, Vt. Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Bailey records stellar inning of relief for PawSox, wants return to parent club

PAWTUCKET — Andrew Bailey doesn’t know when he may return to the Boston Red Sox, but he’s more than anxious to do so.
In Pawtucket’s 6-3 loss to the Syracuse Chiefs at McCoy Stadium on Thursday afternoon, Bailey relieved starter Billy Buckner in the sixth inning and allowed just one hit (without a walk and fanned a pair in his one-frame stint.
That, coupled with a solid outing the night before when he hurled one inning of flawless ball (with a strikeout), the 28-year-old from Cherry Hills, N.J. likes how he’s feeling.

Town Hall mourns loss of Finance Director Woerner

CUMBERLAND – Town Hall employees are trying to cope with the loss of one of their own, following the death of Finance Director Steve Woerner on Wednesday.
Woerner, 61, died after being injured in a recent fall at his home, according to Mayor Daniel J. McKee.
“He was a good man that we loved down here at Town Hall,” McKee said. “He was very valuable to the town and a man who was close to a number of people here.”

Defying school board, commission closes Fifth Ave

WOONSOCKET – In a clash with the School Committee, the Budget Commission Thursday voted to adopt a $66.6 million budget to run the education department that calls for shutting down Fifth Avenue School.
The 4-1 vote, in which Mayor Leo T. Fontaine was the only commissioner who sided with school officials, came a day after the school committee approved the same budget for fiscal year 2013, with an unfunded recommendation to keep the school open.

Picard named Autumnfest Grand Marshal

WOONSOCKET – Robert Picard donned a piece of clothing Thursday that he probably earned many years ago: the orange windbreaker of the Grand Marshal of the Autumnfest Parade.
The honor was bestowed on Picard during the Rotary Club's meeting at River Falls and appeared to catch him completely by surprise. Picard is a longtime member and past president of the Rotary Club and has volunteered for the Autumnfest Committee in a number of capacities for more than 30 years.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Catherine A. (Swanton) Jackson, 82, died August 7, 2012 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Albert E. Jackson, Sr. whom she married May 2, 1953.
Born in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret (Mogan) Swanton.

WOONSOCKET- Pauline T. (Masse) Chaharyn, 63, of Highland St., died Saturday August 4, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center with her family by her side. She was the wife of Alan T. Chaharyn.
Born in Woonsocket, daughter of the late Paul and Martha (Kotzeneauer) Masse.
Prior to retiring she worked for the Woonsocket School Department for several years.
Pauline also was a former Girl Scout Leader in Woonsocket.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and watching birds, especially her favorite, the Hummingbird. She also was an avid traveler.
