PawSox one win away from Governors' Cup championship

PAWTUCKET – PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler likes to point out that each playoff game has been the equivalent of a box of chocolates – you just never know who’s going to play the role of hero on a given night.
Wednesday saw Pawtucket’s battery of pitcher Zach Stewart and catcher Dan Butler step to the forefront and take their bows. Their induction into the club’s ever-expanding legion of primetime performers was officially cemented after PawSox silenced the Charlotte Knights, 2-0, in Game Two of the Governors’ Cup finals before an audience of 3,525.

The outfield prospect carried a .471 postseason average into Game Two of the Governors’ Cup Championship Series, a figure buoyed by a little bit of everything from two home runs to two doubles to five runs batted in.

Judge balks at Blue Cross deal

PROVIDENCE — An agreement to bring Landmark Medical Center back into Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s coverage network yesterday failed to win the blessing of a Superior Court judge who said he’s concerned it may not do enough to save the hospital or get it sold.
Associate Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein said he would decide whether to approve the proposed agreement between Landmark and Blue Cross no later than Tuesday.

Hospice St. Antoine worker charged with theft

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Local police have charged a worker at Hospice St. Antoine with larceny after investigating reports of jewelry thefts from several residents of the elderly care facility.
Capt. Timothy Lafferty reported Iris Mayorga, 43, of Vine Street, Woonsocket, was charged with one misdemeanor count of larceny under $1,500 in connection with the investigation by members of the detective division. Mayorga was released on a summons to appear in District Court on Sept. 25, Lafferty said. The investigation into the thefts at Hospice St. Antoine is continuing, Lafferty added.

Born in the Olneyville section of Providence, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Louise (Ducharme) Pero.

BURRILLVILLE- Joan O. (Nelson) Carlson, 84, passed away Wednesday September 12, 2012. She was the wife of the late Richard W. Carlson.
Mrs. Carlson was born in Providence, a daughter of the late Andrew and Jenny (Stenberg) Nelson.
She lived in Warwick for 44 years before moving to Burrillville 3 years ago. She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church of Warwick and a member of Pioneer Lodge #506, Order of Vasa.

Born in Woonsocket, he is the son of Joseph R. Landi Sr. of North Smithfield and the late Alice (Gelinas) Vose.

BURRILLVILLE- Shirley E. (Steiner) Fish, 82, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 in Overlook Nursing Home, Pascoag. She was the wife of the late George H. Fish. They had resided on Rock Ave. Pascoag. Born in Pascoag, she was the daughter of the late George and Viola (Lunn) Steiner.
Mrs. Fish was a mill worker in area mills for many years, she later went to school and became a Nurse. She worked in the former Lying-In Hospital in Providence. She was a dedicated member of her church; Chepachet Union Church in Glocester.

Richard is survived by 2 brothers John & Ronald Enright both of Woonsocket, 3 sisters, Barbara Heroux & Linda Byam, both of Woonsocket & Patricia Pierce of Michagan. He was the brother of the late Maurice Enright and life partner of the late Gregory Bridges, He also leaves several nieces & nephews.

Casey defeats incumbent Brien

WOONSOCKET — In a stunning upset, city firefighter Stephen M. Casey defeated incumbent State Rep. Jon D. Brien last night in the Democratic primary for District 50, the winner’s first political outing.
The unofficial tally at press time had Casey with 704 votes to Brien’s 654. It was close but numerically too far a bridge for Brien to cross on absentee ballots, with just 48 distributed in the district, according to local canvassing authorities.
