Joe Gardnerâs return to the super middleweight ranks was a triumphant one.
The Woonsocket Boxing Club veteran, who went 0-3 as a light heavyweight a year ago, returned to the win column in his old weight class this past weekend on Big Six Entertainmentâs âWhoâs Next?â card at the R.I. Convention Center in Providence.
Gardner seized an all-Blackstone Valley showdown with Pawtucketâs Rameil Shelton by claiming a four-round unanimous-decision victory by scores of 40-36, 39-37, and 39-37.

You read and hear the names of highly visible, sought-after recruits only to see later in the same sentence that Ed Cooley is right there in the trenches, making inroads with the Jakarr Sampsons of the world.
Even her simplest of motions had become a tall order. No matter that she was gingerly pressing her feet against the hardwood â Brooke Coderreâs âdogsâ were barking loudly and incessantly, begging her not to continue.
On a Friday evening these days, just a handful of members belonging to the Alphonse Yelle Post No. 9 of the American Legion get together at the Post Home at 20 Railroad St.
The reasons they gather together haven't really changed since the post was founded by Manville soldiers returning home from World War I, but it does seem fewer of today's returning warriors have the time or willingness to maintain lasting friendships at a post.

Steve Donahueâs goal 1:12 into the third period and goalie Brian Larenceâs spectacular 34-save effort were the differences in the Mountiesâ crucial 3-2 win that kept their quest for a fifth straight state title (and 43rd in the teamâs storied history) alive.
CUMBERLAND â Now that he's decided where he will attend college, Cumberland High senior pitcher Justin Patrick â a 6-5, 205-pound righty â just wants to focus on the next task at hand: Helping the Clippers to an outstanding Division I-North campaign and securing a playoff berth later this spring.

LINCOLN â John Wilson was just a teenager when he encountered what was the greatest challenge of his life. With World War II in full swing, Wilson left his Woodland Street home in Saylesville in 1944 to join the U.S. Navy and soon found himself serving aboard the Fletcher-class Destroyer Isherwood as it entered battle in the Philippines.
He would see action in the battles of Leyte Gulf and Lingayen Gulf and hone his skill as an anti-aircraft gunner before his ship joined the fleet supporting the invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945.

PROVIDENCE â This time, overtime was not Mount St. Charlesâs time to shine.
For the past five postseasons, overtime had belonged to the Mounties, who won eight straight OT contests during that stretch, but on Friday night, they saw that run come to a bitter end in the opening game of their best-of-three State Championship title series with Bishop Hendricken.
The Woonsocket Prevention Coalition and the local police department are reaching out to the community to assist in crime prevention and helping with unsolved crimes. This billboard, located on the corner of Hamlet Avenue and Manville Road, seeks information in the unsolved killing of 22-year-old Robert Jones on October 28, 2008. Jones was shot in his apartment at 425 Diamond Hill Road in Woonsocket. The Woonsocket Police Department continues to actively work this investigation and has followed up on several leads since the incident occurred, police said.
