PROVIDENCE — As 1998 U. S. Olympic women’s hockey star and gold medallist Sara DeCosta draped runner-up medals around the necks of the Mount St. Charles’ girls, most wiped away tears.
Their disappointment was more than obvious after La Salle Academy had mustered a 2-0 victory over the Mounties at Providence College’s Schneider Arena on Tuesday night. With that triumph in this rubber game of the R.I. Championship Division Tournament’s best-of-three final set, the Rams had earned its first-ever title in the category, and closed its season at 16-5.
NEW YORK — In some ways it was an ending, as in the end of the season for Providence College. In other respects, Tuesday night’s 79-47 bludgeoning at the hands of Seton Hall in opening round of the Big East Tournament can be viewed as the official jumping-off point to the Ed Cooley era.
Cooley’s first season at PC ended in futile fashion, his club suffering a 32-point defeat that goes in the books as the largest loss margin for the Friars in their Big East tourney history. Providence has now dropped 14 of its last 16 conference tournament games.
NEW YORK — Wednesday morning will see the presidents and athletic directors from the Big East gather in a central location. The guest list will include party crashers in the form of representatives from the schools in line to join the league.

“I think they’ll introduce some of the new members and [league president John Marinatto] is going to give us an update to where we are on a lot of issues,” Providence College athletic director Driscoll remarked. “It should be a good meeting and I’m looking forward to it.”
WOONSOCKET — One motorist allegedly spit at another during an apparent case of road rage Sunday — and he was charged with assault for doing it.
Police said Talubeh Njie, 39, was also arrested for driving without a license when he showed up at police headquarters about 7 p.m.
Robert G. Rainone
BURRILLVILLE- Robert "Papa" G. Rainone, 78, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday March 5, 2012 at his home in Harrisville. He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Kearney) Rainone.
Born in Providence he was the son of the late Joseph and Theresa (DeFalco) Rainone.
Mary Eddy McCooey
BLACKSTONE- Mary Eddy McCooey, 102, a resident of Blackstone, MA, and Matunuck, RI died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on March 5, 2012.
She was born in Blackstone, MA to Augustine H. Eddy and Eleanor Eddy. She graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Riverdale, NY and was a teacher of English and Latin at Blackstone High School for many years until she married.
Mary was a member of the Matunuck Point Beach Club Association, the Daughters of The American Revolution, the Stroke Club, and The Blackstone and Millville Historical Societies.
WOONSOCKET — As Gov. Lincoln Chafee and his fiscal advisers looked on, Mayor Leo T. Fontaine disclosed for the first time last night that the School Department’s cumulative projected deficit has ballooned to a staggering $10 million for the last two years.
Speaking in the most dire terms, Fontaine laid out a roadmap for program cuts, departmental consolidations and a supplemental tax bill to fill to gap, but he said that any plan of action must be executed very quickly because the city is fast running out of cash and won’t be able to pay its bills by the end of the month.

SMITHFIELD- Kerrigan, Anne G., 89, of Smithfield, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012.
She was born in North Smithfield, a daughter of the late Patrick F. Kerrigan and Melda (Bouchard) Gardner.

PROVIDENCE — Vincent Council provided the type of response that epitomizes the mindset of the Providence College Friars heading into the Big East Tournament.
To summarize, the junior doesn’t expect the Friars to be a one-and-done casualty, their season ending at the hands of Seton Hall on Day 1 of the five-day mad dash leading up to a hoops coronation at Madison Square Garden.
WOONSOCKET — This is how Mount St. Charles sophomore Brian Larence celebrated an amazing 3-2, double-overtime victory over La Salle Academy on Monday night:
While his teammates went ballistic on the ice, exchanging hugs and high-fives, Larence skated to the chain-link fence near the Mounties’ bench at Adelard Arena and fist-bumped schoolmates with his right-handed glove.
He then shed his stick, bent over, grabbed some snow off the ice and threw it at those fans, still going berserk at what they had just witnessed.
