Ex-Rhode Island Gov. Garrahy dies at 81

PROVIDENCE (AP) — Former Rhode Island Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy has died.
His son, John Garrahy, confirmed through an assistant at his Providence law firm Wednesday that the former governor had died. He was 81.
Additional details were not immediately available.
Garrahy, a Democrat, served as governor from 1977 to 1985. He was lieutenant governor before that.

LINCOLN- Irene A. (Strycharz) Lula, 91, of, Lincoln, RI, Formerly of Blackstone, MA. Passed away on January 23rd. She was the loving wife of the late William M. Lula.
Born, March 27, 1920 in Blackstone, she was the daughter of the late Klemens & Barbara (Majkut) Strycharz.
Irene was employed as a Service Specialist at the Wrentham State School, before retiring, before that, she was employed in the family business, the former Strycharz Market in Blackstone.

BOYNTON BEACH, FL. - Susan (Daigle) Laforme, 60, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at home. She was the wife of the late Roland Laforme.
Born in Bellingham, she was the daughter of Norman and Leona Daigle.
She was employed for many years as a security guard then started her own limousine business. She was a graduate of Blackstone High School.
She is survived by a sister, Nancy Daignault, two nephews, a great niece and a great nephew. She is also survived by two half sisters, Joanne Jobin and Mary Rice and two half brothers, David and Raymond Harper.

Cumberland rides 'D' to victory over Barrington

CUMBERLAND – Every game is important for head coach Gary Reedy and his Cumberland High squad, but Tuesday’s Division II crossover matchup with host Barrington could have been listed under the must-win category.
The Clippers and Eagles each went into the contest with matching 6-3 league marks, putting them just two victories away from a berth in the open state tournament in March. For Cumberland, it also has the strongest part of its schedule the remaining eight games so a win would certainly give it some added momentum.

Woonsocket boys' soccer team heads to Div. I

PROVIDENCE — Realigning the state’s high school football landscape wasn’t the only matter discussed at Monday’s meeting of the Interscholastic League’s Principals’ Committee on Athletics (PCOA). Below are a handful of noteworthy developments that came about during the 90-minute open session.
– In boys’ soccer, the PCOA unanimously approved an alignment for the 2012 and 2013 seasons that results in Tolman and Woonsocket moving up to Division I. The Villa Novans competed in Division I as recent as 2009, while the Tigers have predominantly resided in Division II.

Burrillville girls get back on track, top Tolman

BURRILLVILLE -- After suffering its two most lopsided losses of the year late last week, Burrillville got back on track in a big way on Monday night in its Division II-North matchup against Tolman at the Broncodome.
Sophomore forward Victoria Libby overcame a bloody nose she suffered at the start of the second half to pour in 11 points, contribute 12 rebounds and four steals, and help the Broncos produce a foul-plagued 52-43 victory.

Woonsocket may have to wait for dispatch savings

WOONSOCKET — The city may have to wait a bit longer for any savings to materialize out of its plans to consolidate emergency dispatch services at the police station.
Mayor Leo T. Fontaine told members of the City Council during a work session in the Harris Hall conference room that the consolidation plan may have to be done in stages due to difficulties that have cropped up in moving all dispatching equipment to a single location.
The change to a dispatch system staffed by civilian employees at the police station had been included as a cost savings measure in the city's current budget.

Cumberland looks to restore clipper sign

CUMBERLAND — Rusted and battered by years of exposure to the elements, the Cumberland High School clipper ship, the official high school mascot that has hung for years on the brick exterior of the school building, may be in line for a long overdue makeover.
At its meeting tomorrow, the School Committee will be asked to consider resolutions calling for the restoration and re-painting of the metal clipper ship.
The committee meets at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland High School Cafetorium, 2602 Mendon Road.

FRANKLIN- Albert C. Ralyea 84, of Franklin, died Saturday December 24, 2011 at Milford Regional Medical Center following an illness. He was the husband of the late Anita (Guinard) Ralyea for 62 years before her death in 2009.
Born in Boston on February 13, 1927, a son of the late Alan and Grace (Shepherdson) Ralyea, he was a resident of Franklin for over 60 years.
He was raised in Foxboro, and educated in Walpole and for over 33 years worked in the textile industry at Clark-Cutler McDermott Company in Franklin.

FRANKLIN- Stella E. (Cramer) Swarr 93, of Franklin, died peacefully, Friday January 20, 2012 at the Maples Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham, following a long illness. She was the wife of the late Samuel V. Swarr.
Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 12, 1919 a daughter of the late Joseph & Mary (Douts) Cramer she was a former longtime resident of Lancaster, Penn. and Cumberland, RI.
Mrs. Swarr was educated in Pennsylvania and was a retired homemaker.
