CUMBERLAND — For 22 straight years, Bishop Hendricken has worn the crown and this season it doesn’t seem like that will change.
La Salle Academy has dominated the girls’ side the past four years and an equally-strong squad has returned for the winter campaign.
It will be difficult once again to knock the two powerhouses from their perches at the state meet next month.
The rest…it’s anybody’s guess?
WOONSOCKET – Another copper clipper was in the can Thursday morning thanks to a tip from an alert citizen who heard someone rummaging in a vacant house in the Bernon section and called the police, they said.
Elias Herrera, 41, of Woonsocket, was arrested outside 350 Carrington Ave. at 6:19 a.m., said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette.
“Herrera was captured while attempting to flee from a side entrance,” he said. “Inside the house there was evidence that Herrera was removing copper piping.”
BELLINGHAM — Looking back over his lengthy career, Richard F. Ranieri pointed out one overriding concern that any fire chief has when the alarm sounds in the station house.
"You just hope that the day will end without an injury or fatality involving one of your firefighters or a member of the public," Ranieri said. "We are responsible for what happens, and it is a pretty awesome responsibility.”

PROVIDENCE --- The state finals won’t be held for another two months, but that didn’t stop two-time defending champion Mount St. Charles from feeling right at home in a rare regular-season affair at Providence College’s Schneider Arena, the home of the RIIL hockey championships.
Senior Caitlin Shea and freshman Elisabeth Bedard each netted a pair of goals and senior Lauren Levesque added a goal and two assists on Friday night to lead the Mounties to a dominant 5-0 win over the Cranston Thunderbirds co-op team.
WOONSOCKET – There is always plenty that can be learned from a loss.
Coming off a 15-point setback to East Providence just a few days earlier, Woonsocket used its added knowledge from that contest to its advantage on Friday night and earned a decisive 54-31 victory over a young Lincoln squad at Savaria Gymnasium.
Kailey Fugere, who was out with the flu in the Novans’ 54-39 loss to the Townies back on Tuesday, was back in the lineup. Still not 100 percent, Fugere finished with an all-around strong game for the Novans with 26 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.
PAWTUCKET --- Alex Wilson knows all about the rags-to-riches tale of Kurt Warner, the former Super Bowl-winning St. Louis Rams quarterback and NFL MVP, who just a few years prior to his breakout ’99 season, had worked part-time as a stockboy at a supermarket during his climb to stardom.
That’s because from October to December, the Boston Red Sox prospect had spent his weekday mornings making a few extra bucks by stocking shelves at a Lowe’s home improvement store near his Hurricane, W.V. residence.
PAWTUCKET – It’s often viewed as the last frontier for young hitters to conquer, that of strike-zone recognition. In Alex Hassan’s case, the promising Red Sox outfield prospect is well ahead of the curve, so much so that some of his peers could stand to benefit from his calculated attack.

By all accounts, January is the slowest month on the baseball calendar. It’s the month that follows the hustle and bustle of the player acquisition crunch and the month prior to spring training with the backdrop of warm, picturesque conditions in Florida and Arizona.
NORTH SMITHFIELD — A con man who has been on the run from the law for two years after swindling thousands from his victims in motor vehicle scams was captured in New Jersey Wednesday, the Rhode Island State Police said.
Kevin Millette, 45, a former town resident, was arrested at the Rodeway Inn motel in Galloway, N.J., where he had been living under an assumed name for about month, said State Police Lt. Michael Winquist.
WOONSOCKET — The state Supreme Court Thursday affirmed the conviction of Gilbert Delestre in connection with the brutal beating death of his 3-year-old foster child, Thomas “T.J.” Wright, in 2004.
Delestre and his girlfriend, Katherine Bunnell, the child’s foster mother and aunt, were both convicted of murder and conspiracy for their role in the boy’s killing after separate trials in 2008.
Witnesses testified Delestre hurled the toddler across a room, then knocked him down a flight of stairs with a backhander, causing the boy to lapse into unconsciousness.
