Preparedness made fighting back-to-back fires a success

January 12, 2013

WOONSOCKET — When firefighters have to take on the challenge of putting out two major tenement fires in less than 12 hours, it pays to be well-trained and have experienced leadership.
That is the view Fire Chief Gary Lataille offered late Thursday while watching his department's firefighters, lieutenants, captains and deputy chiefs mop up a fire that could have been tragic without those factors and the precautions of proper fire alarm equipment and mutual aid coordination.

‘Mee Mee’ celebrates 100th; dances to Hawaiian music

January 12, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — In 1913, Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated as the country's 28th president; the first prize was inserted into a Cracker Jack box; and Francis Ouimet shot a 304 at the 19th U.S. Golf Open at The Country Club in Massachusetts.
On Jan. 12 of that year, Cecelia Flynn was born in Woonsocket during, of all things, a blizzard.
But there was no wintry weather yesterday as Cecelia — known to family and friends as "Mee Mee" — celebrated her centennial birthday at a party she actually planned herself.

Evangelista awaits debut with Bay View hockey team

January 12, 2013

It’s been 10½ months since the high school hockey scene last heard from Britney Evangelista, but the last time she made news on the ice, it reverberated around and beyond the state.
It was last Feb. 25, a Saturday night at the Rhode Island Sports Center, in the second game of a best-of-three semifinal-round series against the Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team, that Evangelista, then a sophomore goaltender for North Smithfield, turned in a performance that raised eyebrows and dropped jaws.

61 displaced following back-to-back blazes

January 12, 2013

WOONSOCKET – A rare case of back-to-back tenement fires Thursday came with an unusually heavy toll – no injuries, but a total of 61 tenants displaced from their apartments, including a number of infants and toddlers.
Those who could not find emergency shelter with family members and friends – 23 adults and five children – are staying at the Holiday Inn, courtesy of the American Red Cross.
The hotel aid was slated to expire by Monday, however, unleashing a mini-wave of newly homeless on the city’s already thin-stretched safety net.
