Beauchemin rescues Lions in win over Hurricanes

January 22, 2013

WARWICK — Lincoln junior Casie Beauchemin must have ice water in her veins. With 2.3 seconds left on the clock, Beauchemin swished two free throws to give the Lions a remarkable 34-33 victory over Warwick Vets on Tuesday afternoon.
Down one point late, the Lions (4-2, Division II-North) were scrambling to make something happen when Beauchemin collided with the Hurricanes’ Casey Bennett. Faced with a 1-and-1, the heroine took her time and found nothing but net on her first attempt to tie the score.

Little clarity in city's big picture

January 22, 2013

WOONSOCKET – If you were thinking the much-anticipated five-year plan was going to help you figure out how much the city wants to raise your taxes or cut employee benefits to erase the gallons of red ink in its budget forecasts, think again.
A plan was one thing the five-page grid of numbers unveiled by the Budget Commission Tuesday was not. No roadmap to solvency, no prescriptive advice for how to erase a municipal deficit on track to nudge the $15 million mark by the end of the fiscal year, with little relief in sight through 2017.

Remembering the King

January 22, 2013

WOONSOCKET — The Martin Luther King Day Community Committee capped a celebratory weekend of events honoring the slain civil rights leader with a wreath-laying ceremony at the colorful new King Memorial on South Main Street.
The sculpture-like tableau depicting King preaching to a band of followers was dedicated last fall, but yesterday was the first time it had served as the backdrop for a formal King Day celebration.
By all accounts, the city’s newest work of public art made stellar grades on the occasion, even if the perennials used in the landscaping are dormant this time of year.
