Down for the challenge: Autumnfest begins with Kids Challenge event

October 12, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- Triathlon athlete Skylar Plante of Woonsocket has been training hard over the past week, working out under the watchful eye of her doting grandparents who moved the furniture around in their parlor so Plante could practice her sprinting in between episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants.

On Saturday, Plante’s training didn’t exactly pay off – she came in last place in the Autumnfest Kids Challenge’s Wee Race, a challenge event for younger kids ages 3-6 – but it hardly mattered.

Bronocs fall to Purple for third straight Div. III loss

October 12, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Burrillville High head coach Gennaro Ferraro had just spent perhaps 15 minutes offering his post-game thoughts to his troops before walking to a pair of assistants, shaking his head.
In the background, the public address announcer at the Al Morro Athletic Complex had Prince's hit “Purple Rain” blaring from the system.
It was a rather apt way for the Broncos to trudge toward their team bus. On this Saturday afternoon, where there wasn't an iota of precipitation, Classical High's offense indeed poured on their foe during an unexpected 33-12 Division III blowout.

WOONSOCKET — He may be a few years into his retirement as the head coach of Mount St. Charles Academy’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, but Richard Lawrence still believes in “preaching the gospel of tennis” and attends practices to help teach the sport he loves dearly.
Now that the school boasts its sparkling two-month-old, six-court tennis complex across Logee Street, the athletic director has had an extra hop in his step this fall in taking the short walk across Logee Street to work with the girls’ squad.
