New PayDay Loan Alternative Program to be unveiled

WOONSOCKET – A coalition of non-profits and private companies has made the city ground zero for an experiment in consumer lending they hope will persuade state lawmakers to ban “payday” loans.
A joint venture of the United Way and the Capital Good Fund, the Woonsocket Payday Loan Alternative Program is slated to open its doors at 719 Front St. on Nov. 4.

WOONSOCKET- Depta, Nicholas W., 67, passed away October 22, 2013 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence.
He was the former husband to Mariana Depta.
He was born in Romania, a son of the late Wilhelm & Vera (Kobrinschi) Depta.
Nicholas worked for the Guill Tool & Engineering Company in Warwick and he previously worked for the Bird Machine Co. in Wrentham, MA.
Besides his former wife he is survived by two sons, Christopher & Alexandru Depta both of Woonsocket, and one brother, Allen Depta.

WOONSOCKET- Alice (Desjardins) Garceau, 101, of Woonsocket, died October 21, 2013 in Landmark Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Rene P. Garceau.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ernestine (Hebert) Desjardins.
Alice had been employed as an office and sales clerk for SS Kresge Dollar Store and the former Jupiter Discount Store prior to retiring in 1972. She was a graduate of the class of 1930 from Woonsocket High School.

Doris Soucy

CUMBERLAND- Doris Soucy, 97, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday at the Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late Lucien W. Soucy.
Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Yvonne (LaReau) Hamel. She resided in Cumberland for 14 years, previously residing in North Smithfield.
She was a communicant of St. James Church, Manville. She was an accomplished seamstress, and worked many years in that industry.
