All systems go for 35th annual Autumnfest

October 9, 2013

WOONSOCKET – After nearly a year of planning and more than a month of setup work, the 35th edition of the city’s annual Autumnfest celebration appeared ready to blast off on Wednesday.

Autumnfest Steering Committee Chairman Tim Paul said he was finally feeling that everything needing to be done had been addressed or would be shortly, and all that remained was to get the festival running at World War II Veterans Memorial State Park with its opening events over the next couple of days.

Underwater and overtaxed: Woonsocket homeowners financially stressed

October 9, 2013

WOONSOCKET – Decorated with lush indoor plants and filled with the sweet scent of potpourri, David and Debra Lennox’s property at 108 Parker St. has the cozy, warm feel of home.

You’d never guess the two-family is a funeral parlor for the American Dream.

After purchasing it near the peak of the housing bubble in 2006, they now owe the bank more on their house than it’s worth. They struggled to keep a responsible tenant in the spare unit to help pay the mortgage, without much luck. But the last straw was a two-pronged round of tax hikes that will push their annual bill close to $5,000.

Broncos forced to settle for 1-1 draw with Spartans

BURRILLVILLE --- After 10 games, there’s little question that Burrillville’s defense and midfield both rank among the very finest in the Division III ranks this season.

A few goals scored here and there, and the Broncos would probably be perched near the top of the standings as well.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, who came into the day yielding the fewest goals in the entire division, they remain in eighth place in the 16-team league, courtesy of a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate with sixth-place Scituate on Wednesday afternoon at Gledhill Field.

WOONSOCKET — George White was more than a little bit perturbed when he left the Middle School polling place Tuesday night after voting in the city’s nonpartisan primary election for mayor and City Council.

“I’m person No. 41,” White said as he walked across the school’s parking lot. “Nobody was voting.”

Brien tops City Council primary ballot

October 9, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Even though last night’s City Council primary ended up being inconsequential - no one was eliminated from the race - it did show what place the 14 remaining candidates came in and how many votes they received, which could be a barometer of how well their campaigns have been going and how they may ultimately fare in the Nov. 5 election.

The City Council candidates with the seven highest vote tallies last night included five incumbents and two challengers.
