La Salette’s Festival of Lights set to open Thanksgiving Day

November 24, 2013

ATTLEBORO — A Christmas tradition for thousands of families for well over half a century, the Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro will flip the switch on its Christmas Festival of Lights Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 28.
But this year’s 60th annual festival, which features more than 350,000 lights illuminating over 10 acres, will incorporate a whopping 800,000 LED lights — twice as many as last year – making the shrine a leader in energy efficiency.
A third of the lights were made possible thanks to donations.

Villa Novans, Clippers prepare for 50th straight Thanksgiving meeting

There was nearly an oversight committed as Cumberland and Woonsocket looked to stay the course in the high school football playoff arms race.

Now that the postseason sabers have officially been placed in the Villa Novans’ closet and off to the side for the time being for the Clippers, it’s officially time to talk turkey – as in the annual Thanksgiving Day contest involving these two longtime Blackstone Valley rivals. The latest chapter takes place this Thursday morning with a scheduled 10:30 a.m. kickoff at Woonsocket’s Barry Field.

Manfredo earns 40th victory at Gingras's expense

November 24, 2013

LINCOLN — In the days leading up to his main event fight on Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.’s “Pride & Power” card, Peter Manfredo Jr. referred to himself as a boxer who was “past his prime” and dearly hoped to bring back “the Peter Manfredo Jr. of old” one more time.

Not only was Manfredo facing a very tough super middleweight in Lincoln’s Rich Gingras, but he also dedicated his fight to one of his good friends, Cranston’s Gary Balletto, the former EBA and IBU lightweight champion who was paralyzed from the waist down following an accident at his home in July.
