Northmen blast Warriors, 61-8, earn playoff berth

November 15, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- Given the fact that this was a much easier verdict than he ever thought possible, North Smithfield High head coach Wes Pennington replaced his starting backfield with underclassmen Jake Palmer and Devon Deragon.

For the diminutive Palmer, he had the time of his life, both during and after the Northmen celebrated a stunningly simplistic 61-8 Senior Night triumph over Central Falls on Friday night.

WOONSOCKET – When those last-to-drop oak leaves finally give up the autumn ghost and talk around the office water cooler turns to turkey, it can only mean one thing in Thundermist City: It’s time for the annual Milk Fund appeal.

Founded in 1932, the charity drive raises money through a hodgepodge of community-based promotional events, from fun runs to celebrity dinners. The proceeds are used to purchase milk for needy children and the elderly throughout the Greater Woonsocket area.

Woonsocket residents evacuated after contractors strike pipe

November 14, 2013

WOONSOCKET – Residents were evacuated from a one-block area of Lincoln Street for about an hour Thursday after a contractor struck and ruptured a natural gas line, according to utility and fire officials.

Lincoln Street is located off of Front Street, and upon arrival firefighters quickly set up a staging area at the corner of Lincoln and Parker streets.

Familiar playoff foes SRA, Woonsocket to meet in Division II football quarterfinals

November 14, 2013

If last November’s riveting playoff result is any indication, the “rematch” between St. Raphael and Woonsocket in a R.I. Division II quarterfinal at Barry Field on Saturday should be a wild one.

The Villa Novans had trailed the Saints, 13-0, at the break, but rallied for 21 points in the second half, including 14 in the final quarter, to knot it at 21-21 at Pariseau Field.

In the end, SRA veteran mentor Mike Sassi’s crew took a 28-21 advantage in overtime, though Woonsocket later notched a TD to pull to within one.
