National spotlight shines on tonight's PC-URI clash

December 4, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Ed Cooley has a grand vision for the state’s annual college basketball passion play – Providence versus Rhode Island.

“My goal is to get this game on CBS on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon,” proclaimed the Friars’ head coach. “When you do that, you know that both programs are getting there. Ellsbury's deal doesn't surprise Harper one bit

December 4, 2013

There figures to always be a soft spot in Tommy Harper’s heart for Jacoby Ellsbury. When the topic of Ellsbury and the lavish seven-year, $153-million deal he reportedly agreed to with the New York Yankees came up during a phone interview on Wednesday, Harper elicited a response that was part clairvoyant, part reality check.

Civic groups may have to pay up

WOONSOCKET – When a knife attack left 74-year-old Donald Paterson paralyzed in 2010, the Italian Workingmen’s Club was instrumental in raising funds to help his family buy a vehicle equipped with a wheelchair lift.

Raising funds for victims of crime and calamity, the needy, academic scholarships and youth sports have become part of the club’s 85-year legacy.

But if the Budget Commission gets its way the IWC will be lucky if it can afford to keep the lights on, says club Chairman Mike Kind.
