WOONSOCKET â Embattled Zoning Board member Allen Rivers wants a Superior Court judge to vacate a recent ruling in which he was branded âarrogant and offensive,â saying the jurist was improperly denied all the facts when he issued the decision.
Rivers has hired high-profile lawyer Robert G. Flanders to press the motion before Associate Superior Court Justice Daniel Procaccini. Flanders is a former associate justice of the state Supreme Court but is just as well known these days as the court-appointed receiver who led Central Falls through the stateâs only municipal bankruptcy.
WOONSOCKET â When you are facing lifeâs greatest challenges, it helps to have people standing strongly behind you.
And that is what Tammy Lamberto Roy found she has Thursday evening when a âflash mobâ of co-workers, friends, students and supporters showed up outside her home at 61 Mount St. Charles Ave. with all the love and warmth needed to push back the darkness of a freezing December night.
The crowd marching down the hill from the parking lots at Mount St. Charles Academy carried candles and signs stating boldly âWe love you Tammy,â and âWe believe in You.â
PAWTUCKET â Tom âSaarâ Sorrentine had heard whispers that PCD was pretty good, which in turn had the veteran St. Raphael mentor quite concerned heading into Thursdayâs opening semifinal of the Dennis M. Lynch Memorial Tournament.
Tom Horvat, Alex Minetti and the rest of the Knights did little to ease Sorrentineâs worries as a strong push to the finish line enabled PCD to knock off St. Raphael 57-51 and advance to the title match for the second straight year. The tide turned in the Knightsâ favor thanks to an 11-0 spurt that saw them go from six points down to up 51-46 with 3:25 remaining.

For several area squads, Thursday serves as the grand unveiling â a clean slate for all involved parties with role players looking to blossom into stars, and stars seeking to take their team to the next level.
PROVIDENCE â As Kris Dunnâs high school coach noted, âYou really have to feel for the young man.â
You feel for the youngster because all roads pointed to the 2013-14 season as one that held much promise. The 19-year-old point guard from nearby New London, Conn. was healthy and ready to serve as the conductor of the Friarsâ offense.
Yet in a chilling reminder that even the best-laid plans can vanish in a cloud of smoke, one nasty spill in a preseason game ended up changing the fortune and expectations of both Dunn and the Providence team.
