Gordon S. Lang Jr.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Gordon S. Lang Jr. 70, resident of North Smithfield died peacefully January 20, 2013 at his residence.
He was born May 2, 1942 in Providence RI, a son of the late Gordon Sr. & Kathleen (White) Lang.
Gordon worked for the Congress Construction Co. in Peabody MA, for many years; retiring in 2008, previously he worked for the Gilbane Construction Co. He lived most of his life in North Smithfield most of his life, previously he lived in Lincoln. He was a Marine Veteran. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Woonsocket.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- John R. O'Neill 67, resident of North Smithfield passed away January 23, 2013 at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket.
He was the husband of the late Suzanne (Stevenin) O'Neill.
He was born March 5, 1945 in Woonsocket RI, a son of the late James Harry & Rena (Mercier) O'Neill.

House OKs gay marriage

PROVIDENCE — A bill to legitimize same sex marriage, which both its sponsor and its most vehement opponent agreed was, “The most important piece of legislation (the House) will ever consider” passed the House of Representative on a 51-19 vote Thursday.
When Rep. Gordon Fox, the first openly gay man to be elected Speaker of the House, banged his gavel after the vote and declared “the act prevails,” there were loud cheers, a standing ovation in the spectator galleries and sustained whooping and clapping that lasted for several minutes before Fox banged his gavel again to adjourn the session.

Greater Catholic Regional Schools celebrate 40 years

WOONSOCKET — While so much public attention has been focused on the fiscal turmoil of the public school system, its private, Catholic counterpart is marking 40 years with stable enrollments and tight but sustainable budgets.
“We’re holding our own,” said Larry Poitras, principal of Good Shepherd School, which, along with Monsignor Gadoury School, make up the Greater Woonsocket Catholic Regional School System. “Unless the economy tanks again, I see growth.”

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Roger P. Lamothe, 82, of Village Way, died January 22, 2013 in The Holiday in Lincoln. He was the husband of Lucille (Bacon) Lamothe, whom he married, January 27, 1951.
Born in St. Aime, Quebec, Canada, he was the son of the late Donat and Emma (Godin) Lamothe.

Take precautions against the cold

State and local officials urged residents to take precautions as dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills were forecast for the region through the weekend.
They also advised those at risk of exposure to take shelter at warming centers, including the Woonsocket Senior Center, 84 Social St. The site is open from 1-4 p.m. daily through Friday.
“Dress warmly, in layers, even if you are making a short trip to the mailbox,” advised Woonsocket Emergency Management Director Gary Lataille.

City Council votes to limit pawn shops

WOONSOCKET – Despite charges of creating a monopoly, the City Council Tuesday granted preliminary passage to an ordinance capping the number of pawn shop licenses in the city to two, both of which are already held by Daniel Baldelli, operator of the Gold Loan Company.
The panel voted 5-2 in favor of the measure, over the objections of City Council President John Ward and Vice President Daniel Gendron.

LINCOLN- Jeannette M. Barry, 91, of Boulevard Avenue, Lincoln passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at home. She was the wife of Henry Barry.
Mrs. Barry was born in Laconia, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Joseph A. Baron and Rosa A (Derois) Baron. She was a loving homemaker for her children and husband for over 67 years.
