Schools in Woonsocket and Pawtucket are closed for the second straight day. In the scheme of high school athletics, one of these cities plans on playing through the elements while the other adheres to a policy that if school is canceled, so too are all after-school activities.
BURRILLVILLE â A special risk assessment team formed in December to evaluate existing school safety measures and review ideas and proposals to improve school safety has completed a safety assessment for each of the district's five schools and will draft a report for review by municipal and school leaders.
The Risk Assessment Team was put into place two weeks after the Dec. 14 tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, where a guman killed his mother before opening fire at the school, killing 20 children and six adults.
WOONSOCKET â Pope Benedict XVI caught Blackstone Valley Catholics by surprise when he announced his retirement for health reasons Monday, but most said they supported and even admired what must have been a difficult decision.
âI was proud of him,â said the Rev. Edward St-Godard, pastor of Holy Family Parish. âWhen they say theyâre stepping down because they can no longer function, I think itâs a wonderful thing.â
Andre J. A. Lambert
WOONSOCKET- Andre J. A. Lambert, 77, passed away Thursday at home. He was the husband of the late Carol (Pierce) Lambert.
Born in Lincoln, he was the son of the late Alfred and Malvina (Poisson) Lambert. He resided in Woonsocket for most of his life.
He was employed as a Quality Control Inspector for the former Crosby Valve Company, now known as Tyco Inc. of Mansfield, MA for over 55 years, retiring on December 5, 2012.
He was a communicant and Eucharistic Minister of St. Agatha Church, Woonsocket.
MANCHESTER, NH- Sister Therese Boulay, pm, 89, of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, died February 9, 2013 at St. Joseph Residence in Manchester, NH.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on June 17, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Polycarp and Marie-Ange (Girard) Boulay.
From 1944 until 1951 she taught in the Parochial Elementary Schools in Artic and Albion, RI and 1955 and 1958 at Notre Dame High, Berlin and St. Marie High School, Manchester, NH.
In 1958 she left for the Philippines Island where she served as a missionary for 36 years.
Yvonne R. Dzaman
BLACKSTONE- Yvonne R. (Godin) Dzaman, 92, of Blackstone, MA passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph F. Dzaman.
Born in Bellingham, MA on October 28, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Priscilla (Holcomb) Godin.
Roland E. Merlet
WOONSOCKET- Roland E. "Pete" Merlet, 69, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 4th at the Woonsocket Health & Rehabilitation Ctr.
Born April 2, 1943 in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Roland & Sophie (Stefanik) Merlet.
He resided in Woonsocket most of his life. He was employed as a Fork Lift operator for the Dennison Co. before retiring.
He leaves a son Mark Merlet of Woonsocket a daughter Lisa Piscione of East Greenwich, RI, also a sister Jeanne Comire of Bellingham, MA. And several nieces & nephews. His Funeral & Burial was private.
DOUGLAS- Homer Bates, 89, formerly of Wellington, ME and Pascoag, RI died Thurs. Feb. 7 at St. Camillus Health Center in Whitinsville. He is predeceased by his girlfriend of 23 years, Caroline Salvas who passed away in Nov., 2012.
He is survived by her family, 1 son Kurt Salvas and his wife Izidia of Douglas, a daughter Gwen Daigneault and her husband John of Glendale, RI; 3 grandchildren Caytlynn Daigneault, Hunter and Mason Salvas, and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Yvette M. Ezovski
CUMBERLAND- Yvette M. Ezovski, 80, of Mendon Rd., Cumberland, formerly of Cross St., Manville, died Wednesday afternoon at Landmark Medical Center. She was the wife of Peter Ezovski. They were married on July 24, 1954.
Born in Manville, she was a daughter of the late Henri and Laura (Descoteaux) Laliberte.
She was a resident of Manville prior to moving to Cumberland.
Mrs. Ezovski worked in her early years at Woonsocket Tire and Shaws Meats. She was later employed at AT Cross in Lincoln for many years until retiring in 1997.
