Burrillville skates to 2-2 draw with Cranston West

CRANSTON — Burrillville may been on vacation from school this week, but that hasn’t prevented the Broncos from working overtime these past few days.
Two days after posting a thrilling OT victory on the road over Barrington, the Broncos picked up a point in the Division I-Eccleston standings on Wednesday afternoon by battling Cranston West to a 2-2 draw at the Cranston Vets Rink.

CUMBERLAND – The postseason may be afoot, but make no mistake: this is still the same North Smithfield power keg.
The same squad that was blemish-free during the regular season remained true to form in its playoff opener Wednesday night. Led by usual suspects Matt Walkow, Peter Keenan and Cody L’Heureux, top seed North Smithfield overwhelmed No. 9 Ponaganset, 80-42, in the Division III quarterfinals. Next up for T.J. Ciolfi & Co. is a semifinal-round matchup with No. 4 Johnston Friday at Roger Williams University.

Town seeks funds for capital improvements

BLACKSTONE — Special Town Meeting voters will get down to business March 11 when they consider a combined $8,263,612 in proposals to replace the roofs of the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School, the John F. Kennedy Elementary School and the Augustine F. Maloney Elementary School.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Blackstone-Millville Regional High auditorium, 175 Lincoln St.

Teacher’s idea for biofuel plane trip is taking flight

GLOCESTER — It's been an exciting past few years for science teacher Ross “Mad Dog” McCurdy and his whiz kids at Ponaganset High School.
In 2008, McCurdy and his students were recognized nationally for their Fuel Cell Model T, a hydrogen-powered car built by the students under McCurdy's guidance. McCurdy has taught a class about fuel cells and other renewable energy technologies for several years and the transformed Model T replica is still being used to teach new students about the potential uses of fuel cells.

Non-profits off the hook — for now

WOONSOCKET – Some two dozen non-profit charitable, cultural and civic organizations in the city can rest easy for a while – the Budget Commission has pushed back the timetable for stripping them of tax-exempt status until July 2014.
As commissioners voted 4-0 to spare the tax-exempts until then, they said that in the meantime, the city must do more to make sure the process is legally defensible.

BURRILLVILLE- Ralph J. Cook, 89, died February 19, 2013 at Bayberry Commons, Pascoag. He was the husband of Ruth M. (Jeffrey) Cook whom he married May 17, 1947.
Born in Bridgeton, he was the son of the late Ralph A. and Hattie M. (Ide) Cook.
He graduated from Burrillville High School in 1942 and Hill College in 1944. He was a Charter Member and Secretary of the Bridgeton Fire Company. He was on the committee to build The White Mill Community Park. He worked for the Burrillville School Department, and was a member of the Advent Christian Church of North Scituate.

WOONSOCKET- Phiengsy Sengpraseuth, 87, of Fulton St. died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Thongsay Sengpraseuth.
Phiengsy, is survived by her ten children, seven sons, and 3 daughters, Oudone, Samone, Limphone, Davone, Daryvanh, Bounlane, Khamkhoune, Khemphet, Air, Saysana. Nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Phiengsy was a Homemaker, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was 88. She was a warm and caring person who was loved by all who knew her.

Fire guts Norman Street home

WOONSOCKET — Fire heavily damaged a single family home at 195 Norman St. Tuesday night. Firefighters were called to the dwelling at about 7:40 p.m. and battled heavy flames that gutted the home before it was extinguished. Firefighters cleared the scene at 10:30 p.m.
