PROVIDENCE — New Englanders began the back-breaking job of digging out from as much as 3 feet of snow Saturday and emergency crews used snowmobiles to reach shivering motorists stranded overnight on New York's Long Island after a howling storm swept through the Northeast.

CUMBERLAND — There are swimmers out there who belong to a USA Swimming, Inc.-affiliated club who either choose not to compete on the high school level or are told by their coaches they shouldn’t.
In these parts, they make those decisions for this reason: Meets such as the New England Senior Championships or the regional Age Group equivalent, always mere days after “high school states,” are deemed much more critical because it’s the road most traveled to qualify for more visible national events.

Rwanda’s resilience inspires student trip

WOONSOCKET — When the seniors in Woonsocket High School's Global Citizen Project found out they needed a quick down payment on a discount plane ticket to the African nation of Rwanda, strange things started happening.
"I sold one of my cars to pay for this trip," says Matt Brennan.
"My parents took a payday loan," says Camelia Niles.
"I took money out of my college fund," another says.
