WOONSOCKET --- Mount St. Charles avenged an ugly 4-1 defeat to the Warwick co-op team six nights ago in their regular-season finale by defeating the Warwick squad by the same score on Friday night in their State Championship playoff opener at Adelard Arena.
Elisabeth Berard scored a pair of goals in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and help the Mounties take Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinal-round series. The Mounties can sweep the series tonight at 7 p.m. when the series resumes at Thayer Arena.

Dulieu, Lake to the rescue for Clippers in OT win

WOONSOCKET -- Jaryd Dulieu couldn’t have picked a perfect time to score the biggest goal of his high school career.
The senior co-captain lit the lamp on a pass from Jake Salisbury 3:51 into overtime to lift the Clippers to a 3-2 triumph over the Rogers/Tiverton/Rocky Hill co-op squad on Friday night in the opening contest of their best-of-three Division II quarterfinal-round series at Adelard Arena.

Ex-PC Friars standout God Shammgod can relate to Ricky Ledo

PROVIDENCE — As if on cue, God Shammgod started talking about Ricky Ledo’s situation.
Mind you, there wasn’t a lead-in question posed to Shammgod with the intent of correlating his two-year playing stint at Providence College to the same temptations of leaving school prematurely that Ledo will deal with soon enough. Sitting in Alumni Hall’s cafeteria the other day, the conversation with the now 36-year-old Shammgod began with how much he’s enjoyed being back on PC’s campus as an undergrad student and a member of Ed Cooley’s basketball staff.

WOONSOCKET- Leo E. Derosier 63, of South Main St. died February 23, 2013 at Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Lynette (Rhoades) Derosier.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Leo J. and Isabelle (Chevalier) Derosier.
Leo resided in Wichita, Kansas for eighteen years before returning to Woonsocket last year. He was a cross country truck driver for over fifteen years. Leo was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.

Schools push for quick fixes

WOONSOCKET – School officials know that upwards of 160 students at the high school could miss graduating in 2014 due to state high school reform, but whether that knowledge will allow them to fix the problem over the course of a single school year remains to be seen.
Members of the School Committee acknowledged during their meeting Wednesday night that something will have to be done quickly to set up academic support programs to help the at-risk students in the time available.

City man gets 5 years for crack possession with intent to distribute

WOONSOCKET – A city man was sentenced to five years in federal prison Thursday for possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute the drug.
Felix Reyes, 20, was also ordered to serve five years’ supervised release upon the completion of his prison.
He appeared for sentencing before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary Lisi in Providence after pleading guilty to one count of possession crack with the intent to distribute on Dec. 2, 2012.

Chafee tells Chamber: 'Better days are ahead'

LINCOLN – On the day the state learned that its adjusted unemployment rate for last December had dropped to 9.9 percent – the first time it fell below 10 percent in 47 months – an upbeat Gov. Lincoln Chafee told a roomful of businessmen and women that “better days are ahead.”
The governor told a Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce Eggs and Issues Breakfast Thursday that with sales and income tax revenues rising, and employment going down, all the metrics are headed in the right direction. That is an indication, Chafee said, “that we are managing the state well.”
