Mount nets Div. II victory over Woonsocket

LINCOLN — Mount St. Charles sophomore Jon Blanchette usually teams with classmate Ethan Guevremont at the No. 1 doubles slot, but he discovered just before stepping on the High Ridge Swim and Tennis Club courts Tuesday afternoon that he wouldn’t.
Head coach Sean McClelland had a promotion of sorts in mind for him, as he had learned earlier in the day that his top singles player, senior Jack Ricci, couldn’t attend school due to illness.

LINCOLN – A crowd of players engulfed the craps table as dealer Sam Hasney announced the cutoff for more bets.
“Bets set,” he said. “Shooter’s looking for four. Four wins.”
“C’mon Nick,” somebody cheered as an oversized pair of red dice tumbled across the green felt pit of the craps deck.

House gutted by blaze

WOONSOCKET – A fire, possibly fueled by the area’s dry conditions, heavily damaged a single-family home at 133 Spring Water Drive Tuesday afternoon.
The fire, discovered by neighbors at about 2:15 p.m. appeared to have begun near the front section of the home and consumed a deck porch and front exterior wall before firefighters arrived on scene.

FRANKLIN- Judith L. "Judy" (Sylvia) Palmer 55, of Franklin, died peacefully Sunday April 28, 2013 at the Tippett Home in Needham, following a courageous battle against cancer. She was the beloved wife of Edward M. Ed Palmer.
Born April 10, 1958 in Needham, a daughter of the late Joseph and Norma (Hay) Sylvia, she was a longtime resident of Franklin.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Rita H. (Girard) Chamberlain, 90, formerly of Woonsocket, died Tuesday in The St. Antoine Residence.
She was born in Pascoag, a daughter of the late Napoleon and Augustina (Lamoureux) Girard.
She worked for many years in the packing department of A.T. Cross, retiring in 1987. Mrs. Chamberlain was a member of the St. Joseph's Senior Citizens, the Crepeau Court Club, and was a former member of the St. Ann's Choir.

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Dorothy J. Prince 86, died April 26, 2013, at the St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield.
She was the loving wife of 64 years to the late Leon E. Prince.
She was born in Rotan Texas, a son of the late L.J. & Lura (Thompson) Blevins.
She formally worked for the Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Carol Freiberger of N. Smithfield, six grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Madelaine Kroger.

Council to take up fire district merge

CUMBERLAND – The town’s plan to merge its four independent fire districts reaches a major milestone Wednesday when the Town Council votes to ask state lawmakers to approve the incorporation of a unified town fire district.
The state-approved incorporation would include the creation of a seven-member interim appointed fire committee by June 30 to govern and manage the finances of the unified fire district until a permanent committee is elected next year.
The council meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 45 Broad St.

Backpack causes scare

WOONSOCKET – Police used explosives to render a suspicious backpack found behind the Cass Avenue home of a Muslim family harmless on Saturday but now believe the left-behind item was not a hate-crime response to the terror-bombing of the Boston Marathon.
The backpack, which had a reference to “U.S. Bomb” among its several marking, contained items believed to have been stolen and is not believed to have been left as a threat to anyone, Detective Jamie L. Paone, Woonsocket Police Department spokeswoman, said yesterday afternoon.
