CRANSTON â Lincoln High junior Jon Wahl achieved medalist honors on Day 1 of the two-day Interscholastic League individual and state golf championships, waving his putter like a magic wand just about every time he set foot on the greens at Cranston Country Club.
Wahl finished the day with an even-par 71, and heâll take a two-stroke lead into Wednesdayâs final round with Barringtonâs Stephen Miller and Justin Matrone each carting round 73. Three additional players sit three strokes off the pace Wahl set.
WOONSOCKET â Stanislaw Okruta, 78, and his downstairs neighbor, Julien Stroz, 61, are friendly enough to watch TV together, but when an argument erupted over the remote control Sunday one of them ended up in the hospital.
Stroz was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with stab wounds to his head, arm and torso â the result of what he called âa little fightâ with Okruta, according to police reports.
Because Stroz adamantly declined to file a complaint against him, Okruta was not charged with any crime, according to Detective Sgt. Matt Ryan.
WOONSOCKET â Could four-day school weeks be coming to Woonsocket?
Itâs possible, if a bill that passed the Senate last week manages to find its way to becoming law.
Introduced by State Senator Roger Picard (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland), the bill doesnât mandate four-day school weeks. But with the stateâs consent, school districts could adopt any sort of calendar they deem fit, so long as the school year provides no less than 1,080 hours of instructional time, the equivalent of the existing 180-day minimum.
WOONSOCKET â Seventeen years after his conviction in the road rage killing of another man with a powerful crossbow, Donald Graham is seeking a new trial with help from a friend in Alaska who has written a book about him.
Now 73, Graham is serving life without parole in the 1994 slaying of 42-year-old Michael Blodgett on the shoulder of I-95 in Attleboro, near the state line.
WOONSOCKET- Rebecca "Rachel" (Robillard) Frayne, 100, died Sunday May 26, 2013 in The Holiday Nursing Home, Lincoln, surrounded by family and friends. She was the wife of the late Joseph E. Frayne.
Born in Ste. Emelie, Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Alexandre and Marie (Genereaux) Robillard. She has been a resident of Woonsocket since 1920.
Michael A. Leonard
WOONSOCKET- Michael A. Leonard, 35, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully Friday, May 24, 2013, at Trinity Nursing Home in Woonsocket.
He was the husband of Jean Leonard and the father of Michaela and Michael Jr.
He was the brother of Charlene, Edward, Steven and amber. He was the son of Eleanor Leonard and the uncle of C.J. Royster.
He was an avid lover of the Boston red Sox. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
Funeral arrangements will be private.
Betty Jo Tessier
WOONSOCKET- Tessier, Betty Jo, 86, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully Friday May 24th at Oakland Grove Health Center. She was the wife of the late Frederick E. Tessier.
Born in Charlotte, NC, a daughter of the late Frontis and Margaret Hartis.
BELLINGHAM, MA- Mary Alice (Arsenault) Henderson, 85, of Bellingham, MA passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Milford Regional Medical Center after a brief illness with loving family by her side. Married for 67 years, she was the beloved wife of Joseph K. Henderson of Bellingham, MA.
Born and raised in Waltham, MA, Mary was the daughter of the late Phillip and Catherine (Aucoin) Arsenault and the sister of Gerald Arsenault and Yvonne Henderson. She had resided in Bellingham for the last 60 years.
Joseph B. Reynolds
WOONSOCKET- Joseph B. Reynolds 50, resident of Woonsocket, died May 18, 2013 at his residence.
He was the son of the late James Sr. and Alice (Hingley) Reynolds.
He worked for Hometown Auto Body in North Smithfield; previously he worked for the Polytop Co, and Walmart. He lived most of his life in Woonsocket; formerly he lived in North Smithfield and Burrillville.
He is survived by his children, daughter, Kristania Reynolds, son, Shane Reynolds, sisters, Janet A. Bedard, and Joan M. Reynolds, and brothers, Jeffrey C. Reynolds, and John H. Reynolds.
Helen S. Hagan
BURRILLVILLE- Helen S. (Fidrych) Hagan, 91, died peacefully Friday, May 24, 2013 surrounded by her loving family at Philip Hulitar Home & Hospice Care of RI, Providence. Beloved wife of William F. Hagan Sr., they were married for 66 years.
Born in Pascoag, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sofya (Radziewicz) Fidrych. She was a lifelong resident of Pascoag.
Helen worked in area textile mills and at Tupperware, then at Zambarano Hospital before retiring. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Pascoag and one of its oldest parishioners.
